I'm sorry...It won't work...

Taking a likable character and making them into something evil just doesn't work. Killer Christ! The easter bunny form hell! Kindegarten killer! These all ring stupid. This has no chance...

reply

Killer Christ would be so awesome.

It works if it is comedy/horror. Ever watch Christmas Evil it is hilarious.

Plus, Santa Claus is the world's most honored pedophile.

reply

Well, the predecessor of the Santa Claus was Nuutti Pukki and he was not that nice guy, his been known at least in Finland and Holland and was on duty on pre-cristian time in Finland and in some form to the 1950´s. Patron Saint of Finland is Saint Claus or was to the year of 1527 when Finland became protestant. Finlands indepence day is 06th of the December the day of Santa Claus in the Catholic calendar.

reply

thank you so much for mentioning Christmas Evil, Ill try to find that!

reply

Study up on the history of the MYTH of Santa Claus and you'll see there's room for a dark interpretation, which is what this film creates (I saw it at TIFF, just to qualify my comments). The only reason this won't be some kind of box office smash in North America is because it's mostly in Finnish (with a little English) and subtitled, but the cult will grow on DVD and Blu-Ray. Otherwise, it's SUCH a high-concept movie that Hollywood will inevitably remake it with fifty times the budget and marquee names, at which point you'll probably shout to the heavens what an original idea it is!! I can only hope that the director has done a couple of Finnish sequels by then, because this film absolutely BEGS for them!

reply

They wont ever remake this. If it was a straight forward horror they might. But Hollywood isn't going to try anything new with horror.

"You know someone lacks intelligence when their only argument is Dont See It."

reply

I hope you're right, but for some reason I think Hollywood will eventually remake this and turn it into a straight forward horror movie.

reply

Of course Hollywood will remake this. Hollywood remakes everything sooner or later. You can thank the Americans who are too lazy to read subtitles for that.

reply

Well I guess people are a bit irritated that Americans have the choice to be lazy. I wouldn't even call Americans lazy for assuming the films they see in theaters are in their native language. It's what we're accustomed to.
If another non-english country put out almost a 100% of the theatrical releases for the rest of the world than their native language would be the norm. Other countries have gotten use to subtitles or dubbing or know english because the US is the country making the majority of films. We're use to seeing films in english without subtitles in the theaters and rightly so.

But I will say Hollywood does not reflect America. Hollywood makes remakes because foreign films generally don't become mainstream and Americans are simply use to straight up English movies in theaters. Plus Hollywood is afraid to make new content, they'd rather keep doing the same crap.

An evil santa film will not be remade.

reply

I see your point. But did you know that India alone produces more movies a year than the USA? The USA is definitely more mainstream though.

"Worship me or I'll torture you forever"

reply

And India notoriously remakes every movie in the world. Bollywood is filled with shot for shot ripoffs from other country's cinemas. I suppose that when you make THAT many movies a year, you gotta run dry of original scripts pretty early....

reply

Erm, what do you mean 'mainstream'? In India, Bollywood is mainstream.

reply

Yeah, that's what I was saying, that there are also mainstream foreign studios, like Bollywood. Betel-geuse was the one saying foreign movies can't be mainstream. C'mon, if you're going to respond to a year old post, at least make sure you're reading the discussion right. ;P

yet a movie about a 12 year old who falls in love with a girl vampire would be? I think i has every chance of being re-made. It won't be like Rare Exports, but it will have Demon Santa Claus and his demented elves.

Hollywood Dreams of a Rare Exports Remake

reply

Everyone complains about American rmeakes, but seriously have you seen the remakes of American movies in say Turkey and India. Even Japan has remade some of our stuff and it's worse crap than anything WE could put together, but hilariously so XD

You! Obey the fist!

Rightly so? I personally think Americans would benefit enormously from having exposure to a wider range of films from a wider range of countries. It's not that Americans are dumb or lazy or anything like that - it's just that many have a tendency to be somewhat insular. Watching films from around the world tends to give you slightly more perspective, and to increase your awareness of cultures other than your own.

It'd be great if accessible and entertaining non-American films like A Separation and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and Persepolis and The Edge of Heaven were to play in multiplexes across America. Those are some of the greatest films of the last ten years, and not particularly difficult to understand or appreciate - yet a vast majority of Americans are completely unaware of them.
If another non-english country put out almost a 100% of the theatrical releases for the rest of the world than their native language would be the norm.
Wait, what?

Hollywood movies almost inevitably make the most money, but they're certainly not responsible for anything like 100% of theatrical releases. Pretty much every country has its own film industry. If you go to France, a large portion of the movies playing in theaters will be movies in French made in France. If you go to Japan or South Korea or India or Nepal it'll be the same.
Other countries have gotten use to subtitles or dubbing or know english because the US is the country making the majority of films.
Well no, not as much.

Hollywood is one of the most productive film producers, and their films tend to be shown around the world - but as I said above, every country also has its own industry. Germany produces its own films, Russia produces its own films, Iran produces its own films, South Africa produces its own films... Add those all together, and they far outweigh the films made in Hollywood.

So no, Hollywood doesn't make anything like the majority of films.

Based on your post, I think you'd be very surprised to learn the real state of contemporary film - there's a whole world of cinema out there that you're not seeing and that you're apparently not aware of. A lot of it is crap, but there's also a lot of great stuff to be found too.

I suppose on a clear day you can see the class struggle from here

I know... SO glad other countries dont do remakes....

A long time ago National Lampoon featured a fake movie poster that showed a very angry looking Jesus Christ pushing over large skyscrapers and the tag line was; "He's back...and this time he's really Pissed!" Although I found it sacrilegious and somewhat offensive, I could see the humor and commercial potiential in it. That was over 20 years ago. With the strange creepy, oddball films I've seen lately, it seems almost anything is allowed now...up to a point. This film could work if it's handled in the right way.

reply

Spot on. And what about the end of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ? Martial music, an open tomb and Jesus ready to relive the Old Testament.

As the comedian Chris Rush joked in reference to Mel's movie: Christ said, "I shall return", he didn't say "I'll be back."

You are narrow minded OP. There is a market for just about EVERYTHING.

are you nuts!! Bill Goldberg starred as a Killer Santa in a flick called "Santa Claws" a couple years back and that was great! Futurama has an evil santa! Tales From the Crypt had an evil santa! They all worked! imagination... use it =)
