Doesn't sound like you know very much about real drugs. That is the exact type of place meth is cooked and sold. Meth, unlike the "traditional" drugs, doesn't need to be bought from a third party. To get cocaine or heroin, one needs to buy it from someone who has brought it into the country. This means having to know someone who sells it, more people means higher costs and higher chance of being caught. Not to mention, higher chance of violence due to dealing with unknown people that actively engage in criminal activity. Most importantly, at some point, someone has to know someone that has a cheap enough source to make it economically worth it. With meth, anyone can hit the internet to get some instructions and then hit wal-mart and attempt to make a bach to sell or use, it's surprisingly cheap and easy. It's also dangerous and hard to hide, cooking in a "high density areas" will be obvious to anyone that lives close to you. The fumes are very dangerous and even if they don't blow up, they are likely to permanently disable and kill people. Unlike crack, that can be cooked on a stove top and baked in any oven, with people in the next room not even aware of what you are making. So, with no need for a "supplier" and anonymity offering a discreet and "safe" place to cook, rural areas are booming with meth addiction.
Rather the movie was boring or not, that aspect was legit. On average, the movie was more realistic than a lot of mainstream drug movies or TV shows, but real life is boring and it's not glamourous.
