I couldn't believe it was the same man who played Bugsy in Perfect Storm. In Winter's Bone he really gave off an aura of lethal force.

His first scene with Ree Was chilling. Very authentic performance and he really had a great character arc, by the end there was a sense of understanding for him and even sympathy.

I felt like he wouldn't have survived long after the credits.

I just watched it again, second time, after first seeing it a few years ago. I'd forgotten about the end when Teardrop says he knows who killed Jessup and he tells Ree to hold onto the banjo for him. He knows he's probably going to get himself killed while avenging Jessup's murder.



Yeah, I wonder how many people caught that. I think she tries to offer him the banjo as a gesture to drop it and get back to living.

The people in Thump Milton's barn (after Ree was beaten up by the women) were quite obviously terrified of Teardrop.

Except for Thump (the old man), perhaps.

Everyone else was afraid of him.

They were smart to be afraid.

All the buzz was around Jennifer Lawrence but I think he was the best performer in this movie.

He's becoming one of my favorites.

Me and You and Everyone We Know, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Winter's Bone. Plus all the other great movies he shows up with small parts...

The dude has range!

What a tight adult story and set of players. He grabbed me right away. Nailed that character type -- not that easy to get right since has to be done fully under the skin like lived the life!
This movie needs the viewer who appreciates a Sling Blade caliber of performance and theme. Not for casual time. Haunting look at a specific subset of American life.
Only sad part is how I felt after it was over. Not that I'd been "entertained" for the time, but rather kind of grateful for being exposed to this scene.
Wouldn't have wanted such a life but man did it capture the experience.
Extra points for the cinematography.
