JLa does't look like 17

i liked this film & although Jennifer Lawrence's performance was superb but she didn't look like 17. She definitely looked 19-20. She was 20 years old when the film was released. So i feel maybe her age should have been shown as 19-20 with little changes in script or someone younger should have been cast instead of her if the director really wanted the protagonist to be 17. I would like to know your views guys.

Lol...she looked 17 to me here.

she was 18 when the movie was made. That's a lot closer than most actors portraying high school age kids :)

reply

She was actually 19. That's close enough.

I was shocked when Ree told the military recruiter that she was 17; not because she didn't look it, but because of the overwhelming amount of responsibility on her shoulders at that age. This is someone who has had to leave her youth and her modest ambitions behind in order to fight for her family's survival. If Ree didn't look like a typical 17-year-old to you, that's not because Jennifer Lawrence was too old for the role, it's because her performance was exceptional. Lawrence's Ree was steely, pragmatic, fiercely protective of her dependants, and above all -- perfectly cast.

The character had to be a minor so that she would get turned down by the Army recruiter. Lawrence was completely plausible as a seventeen-year-old. There actually are people that age with Ree's maturity, although they're few and far between.
