how exactly was jerry ripping off eazy

towards the end, when eazy's girl pointed out how eazy had been gettin screwed, do they ever actually explain technically what jerry did to rip him off? can anyone explain it in layman's terms?

also-how did he rip off ice cube earlier in the movie? why didn't ice cube want to sign the contract?

If you think Tony Soprano died, you're overanalyzing the ending and creating your own script.

I think Eazy E was the one trying to screw Cube over early on.

As for the later stuff, I don't know, and who knows what the girlfriend was looking at to come to that conclusion. i'm sure any payment to a manager is looked at as "ripping off".

I think eazy didn't really want to share the front writer spot.

He didn't want Cube to get a lawyer to look over the contract, which is a red flag meaning there's something in it he (Jerry) didn't want revealed.

We don't know what was in contract, but the $75,000 check might've been Jerry trying to pay Cube off and then saying he owns the rights to the songs that N.W.A, including the ones that Cube wrote or co-wrote, were owned by Eric's record company.

I don't know if this happened in real life in this case, but Cube was smart not to sign the contract and take the money. If he did, basically the contract could've said anything like the record company owns the name -- including the name "Ice Cube", the "Straight Outta Compton" royalties, and song publishing and recording rights (which would then give the record company ALL the royalties in the future). If he signed he would've got $75,000 and the record company potentially could make millions (if not more) on future sales of the album, songs, etc. because basically Cube would've been selling his share or rights for the $75,000, which is what it would be if it went to court in the future.

Look what happened to the Sugar Hill Gang (Rapper's Delight). They all signed a contract with Sugar Hill Records (and they didn't know what they were signing at the time), but it gave the record company full control over the money, record sales, future record sales and licensing, PLUS it gave the record company EXCLUSIVE rights to the name "Sugar Hill Gang" so that the original group members, once they left the group (or were fired) they couldn't even use their own name! They even had the son of the record company's owner going out on tours as the "Sugar Hill Gang" and lip-syncing to the record and all perfectly legal because of that contract the original members signed. I saw this on UNSUNG.

As far as how Jerry was ripping off Eric, he was probably stealing money which is why so many bills were past due and all that stuff that Tomica tells Eric in the end.

This is another way that record companies make money: all that stuff like studio time, makeup/hair/clothes, music videos, distribution, legal, promotions, etc., all comes out of the future money that artists make on their record, CD, MP3 sales. Sometimes the record company goes waaaayyyyy over board, probably in most times, and the artist don't even know and then they are shocked when the bill comes due. This is what happened to TLC and Tony Braxton: they both had HUGE commercial hit albums and singles and yet both had to file bankruptcy.

I don't remember when it happened but I know that Dre came to that conclusion because he was trying to tell Eazy-E that Jerry was not good in one of those scenes about halfway through the movie and before he goes solo (I think).

What I gather from the scene is that Jerry wasn't paying EZ what he said he was going to, evidenced by the fact that a lot of things were not paid, and with others, checks bounced. It was most likely that there was an account from which these bills were being paid, but which didn't have the money in it that Jerry said it was supposed to, or something to that effect. An account that wasn't a personal account, but the Ruthless Records account. Remember, it's clear that EZ didn't have an accountant to take care of these things, and surely Jerry knew that and took advantage of it. Jerry surely made money, while EZ didn't.

Time wounds all heels.

Not wanting Cube to have his contract looked over before signing and knowing his rights. Not wanting to pay Cube his correct worth of writer and performer.

Not paying other members they're full worth for albums and shows.

Not paying company expenses in order to pocket the money.

Cant take this movie as truth.

Eazy has said that he blames Priority Records and egos for the breakup. It has been stated that Cube might have been mad that DOC got the solo album first.

Eazy said that Cube was listening to people in Priority about doing his own thing and Dre was getting paid under the table.

I think the breakdown was for every dollar, Eazy might have been getting 80 cents because he is an owner, NWA artist, and a solo artist, Jerry probably was getting 10 percent, and the rest was getting 10 percent but I believe Dre got the most compared to the rest of the group.

I'm not so sure how Jerry was ripping EZ. I think that maybe he was probably over charging them for expenses that the group may have been responsible for or maybe he was taking a percentage off the top along with his regular share. Whatever he was doing, it was legal and in those contracts that Cube didn't want to sign from the beginning. Basically Cube smelled a rat from the get go that came back later to bite the rest of them in the ass. The rest of them were young and eager to cash that check but Cube knew better and wouldn't sign without a lawyer. Unlike the rest of them, he knew that that was their money that Jerry owed them from back pay and he had basically made fools of the rest of them by holding their own money over their heads as an incentive to sign his bogus contract, which was a red flag for Cube. If Jerry didn't have anything to hide in those contracts then why would he go to such lengths to make them hurry and sign without having their own lawyer to take a look? If he was really looking out for their best interest, like Eazy thought, he would have been fine with them getting their own lawyer. He probably would have encouraged it. By Eazy owning the label, I'm sure he did have someone look at his original contract but Eazy's lawyer was probably Jerry's lawyer too or maybe some slime ball that Jerry introduced Eazy to. Also, as their relationship (Jerry and Eazy) progressed and Jerry started to gain Eazy's trust, Eazy started signing stuff that he wasn't even reading himself.

It seems like the standard for young artist starting out. The label ends up using their eagerness against them by rushing them to sign bogus contracts in a hurry, without having time to have an attorney look at it. That's why a lot of these artist, like TLC and Toni Braxton end up broke after their first album. It's standard business in the music world but by their sophomore album they usually learn from their mistake and get an attorney. Eazy was the label owner so he probably wasn't getting ripped off as blatantly as the others, until he started signing off on stuff before reading it.

I woke up this way...

It doesn't really go into it, but I think it was probably more about Eazy being naive about how the industry works and choosing to blame Jerry instead of assuming some responsibility for it himself.

Earlier in the film at the pool party, Jerry is distressed by it all because he knows it's costing a bomb. When he presents the bill to Eazy, Eazy looks at him like he's a crook and Jerry explains "who did you thnk was paying for all of this?". Eazy just assumed that the record company was picking up the tab, when it was the group paying for it all.

It never really explains if Jerry was skimming or if it was just that the group didn't quite grasp how the industry works.

It's not as though Jerry was living a lavish lifestyle after all.
