What's with the small roles for MC Ren and DJ Yella?
Were some scenes cut? Or were these 2 guys really just the Joey Fatone/Chris Kirkpatrick of NWA?
Shame that Aldis Hodge got so little screentime. Real good actor.

shareYou know that has made me kind of upset that Ren and Yella's parts were just minor. Ren did most of the writing for everyone especially after Cube left. Yella did a lot of the drum beats and production along with Dre. I know they couldn't go from detail to detail cuz a movie can't be but so long but I just feel like they shorted the guys though.
Oh yeah, you can keep the affirmative token.
This is exactly how I felt. I get that they gave more importance to the others due to their prolonged fame and what not, but still these 2 were given glorified cameo status.

Real *beep* was released before Efil4Zaggin.
It was first included in the 100 Miles And Runnin EP.
We didn't really get to see that because they pretty much glossed over them working on Efil4Zaggin which Ren and D.O.C. did all the writing for. They played Appetite For Destruction, *beep* 4 Life (on the Director's Cut) and Made *beep* (which was also on the 100 Miles and Runnin') but they never mentioned them working on the Efil4Zaggin album in the movie which is weird because some of the lines from No Vaseline came from what they said about him on that album such as the Broomstick line.
Ren did most of the writing for everyone especially after Cube left.I thought the scene at the pool party, when Jerry Heller told Eazy-E that Ren is probably better than Ice Cube, was there to highlight this
Ren did most of the writing for everyone especially after Cube left.Even before Ice Cube left,I thought I remember him saying he wrote half or a lot of the songs.I thought by him not saying,"I wrote all of the songs" they expected the audience to understand that Ice Cube wasn't the only one writing the songs. They probably thought it would be clear to the audience that Ren helped during and after Ice Cube's departure. share
I was also disappointed by the lack of screentime on Ren and Yella. They made it seem like N.W.A was mainly the trio of Cube, Eazy and Dre with Ren, Yella and D.O.C. as their backup dancers.
Granted, I accept that Ren didn't have the solo success of his three more famous bandmates, but he was still one of the main rappers/lyricists of the group. This is the Ruthless Villain we're talking about! They could have given him more to do in the first half than just making him a hype man. Yella was responsible for creating a lot of the music with Dre and he too could have been given more to do than just comic relief.

Ren was my favorite rapper in the group. I still can recite his rant from Compton's in the House. Not sure why he was given such a minor role in the movie. For younger audiences who really don't know NWA they'll just assume the band was Easy E, Dre, and Cube with a bunch of talentless hacks hanging around.
shareWhere the hell was Arabian Prince? They didn't even mention him. This wasn't an NWA movie - it was a movie about Dre, Ice Cube, and Eazy E.

Right. Arabian Prince was all in and on the album cover. All was good but remember, Cube was the youngest in the group and still in high school. After graduating, he went to an architectural school in Arizona. He finished there and came home. Arabian said when Cube came back, attention kind of shifted and seemed to be geared more toward Cube's raps, he started to feel he wasn't needed as much and could do better on his own so he left. He made sure to say there's no animosity toward Cube, Dre or the film, Straight Outta Compton.
I read that interview in 2015 around the time the movie first came out. I don't remember where.
