Journey 1 vs Journey 2

Over the past couple of nights I watched both films.

I thought Journey to the Center of the Earth was fairly enjoyable but it had one huge problem, and that was an over-reliance on green screen and environments that were entirely digital. So much of that film has this really artificial look and feel and it really bothered me as I was watching it.

This is something that Journey 2 improves on tremendously. So much more of the film feels like the characters are actually in a real, physical place. Not only do far fewer of the environments feel all-digital but the creatures look a lot better as well. They must have gone with a different FX company for this one.

Not only that, but I thought that the storyline for Journey 2 was more fun and elicited more of a sense of wonder from the viewer. And everyone seemed to be having a lot of fun while making the film, especially Michael Caine, who I thought was awesome.

I would probably give Journey 1 a C but would give Journey 2 a solid B-. Neither are great films by any means, but I had more fun with Journey 2 and it's probably the only film of the two that I might ever watch again.

Why they felt compelled to make this sequel, we'll never know

You did not enjoy this film then, I take it?

To answer your question though, I'm sure the $241 million Journey to the Center of the Earth grossed on a $60 million budget had something to do with it.
