What happened to Sean's dad?
I wonder what happened to Sean's dad since I think it was implied that he abandoned his son but wasn't quite clear on the details.

Yes. Brendan Fraser played his uncle in the first one.
shareHe was his father's brother, which makes the birthday scene a little strange in my eyes. One wouldn't expect him to miss that - and his father - after all that bonding in the first movie.
Perhaps he was at the center of the earth, on a longer expedition. :-)
He was probably giving one to the attractive Icelandic bint from the first movie.
shareThe reason why Trevor wasn't there was because the script was done in a hurry. The people writing the movie didn't have enough money in their budget, or time for Brendan to just make that small cameo at the end. And sadly they forgot about him.
shareI think the script was rewritten in a hurry when it became apparent that Fraser couldn't or wouldn't reprise his role.
All the scenes between step-father and son indicate to me, that it was supposed to Fraser to play these scenes and that he and his father had serious father - unfavorite son issues.
