Rubbish

Creepy carnivals and the Jersey Devil - could be an interesting combination. However, this was not one of Sci Fi's better efforts. We have a dinky, unconvincing monster; a generic, staunchly-effective sheriff; a generic, one-dimensional religious-fanatic priest; and some generic, one-dimensional stereotype rednecks. Not much thought went into these chararacters or the plot. I guess I'd call the whole thing a generic waste of time.

Agreed! I actually kind of liked the idea, the execution however...not so much. Lou Diamond Phillips was the only reason I tuned in. That said, I do enjoy the sci-fi channel. At first when I saw the previews to it, I thought the "Devil" was a gargoyle and that really sounded like a neat premise. The overall plot looked like something they dug out of a vault that the the plug pulled on it circa 1983.

This was the best Scifi original yet. I wish the Sci-Fi channel would go back to playing Sci-Fi movies instead of making their own crap. Thier portrail of the Jersey Devil was closer to legend than other shows. They did make JD bigger than he is supposed to be, he is reported at 4 to 6 feet tall. I won't hold that against them.

uh were you guys expecting this to be good?

I agree more with you. I thought this was one of the best films they've done yet, and I've liked the vast majority I've seen. Great production values on this one, the story was well told, I liked the performances, I loved the setting . . . I just thought the very ending was very slightly disappointing. 9/10 from me for a final score.

--- SPOILERS ---

Nah-uh, this movie was GREAT! It was definitely Syfy's best and a pretty good film with decent actors and acceptable effects - especially considering some of the bad ones they have had before.

Who gives a sh!t about the characters' "dimensions", this was a creature film - not a deep-character film. If you want deep character development - go watch a f'ing drama. I for one was happy to see a movie with no happy endings with the hero being coupled up with some chick. I really liked the cast, characters, the idea, the carnival, the settings, the creature and the story.

The only reason I didn't give it a 10 was because of the ending (didn't want him to die), the occasional over-the-top pastor and the lynching. The movie could have ended where the pastor "killed" the creature and then the sheriff could have just woken up and he could have arrested him, lol. So I gave it a well-deserved 9 because I did enjoy it. One of the best creature films I've seen in a long time.

Syfy has got some fun films! I wish we got that channel over here.

I thought this film was a lot of fun. The story wasn't nearly as predictable as I expected given the premise. Moreover, Lou Diamond Phillips did a solid job as the sheriff. 8 out of 10 from me.
