The embassy scene didnt make sense

It really didn't make sense that he would tell his daughter to crash the US Marines checkpoint. He knew they would open fire on the car possibly hitting his daughter,, and the car possibly kill or injure US personnel. What did he really have to gain from doing this? He lost the tail on him at the train track. Even if there was another guy gaining on him, if he just pulled up to the checkpoint and stopped, its not like 2-3 guys with pistols were going to open fire at the car with a bunch of armed US Marines standing there.
The much more realistic scenario would be him pulling up to the checkpoint, identifying themselves as Americans, and saying 'watch my daughter, I have to rescue my wife who's been kidnapped by criminals"

reply

Haha, not to mention him having the time to make a phone call to his buddy while a couple of soldiers are just standing at the top of the steps looking on even after that same car just took out the guard's booth of the US Embassy. Oh, and he's out and about looking for his wife half an hour after all that? Something tells me that the Embassy wouldn't be so accommodating.

They had four years between the last movie and this, yet this one feels so rushed. Just nowhere near the original.

reply

I feel like when they come up with this stuff, somebody in the room with the drawing board will speak up and say, why would he be driving through the US Embassy? And why doesn't anyone from the Embassy have any type of reaction?

And those guys probably hear back, "Stop at the checkpoint? But wouldn't it be cooler if they just drove straight through the checkpoint instead?"

So much of the movie was like that... Kim throwing grenades willy nilly all over Istanbul with absolutely ZERO attention paid to her. Ridiculous.

My favorite part was when Kim, who could barely drive an automatic back home, can suddenly whip around crowded streets in a standard. She would have stalled, they would have died, we could have gone home 45 minutes sooner.

reply

And meanwhile Neeson says.

"Do you know how to shoot?"

"No."

"Then drive".

[Except she's certifiably incapable of that, as we established at the beginning]

reply

And she drives stick shift like a rally car driver. Such a terrible movie.

I love movies.

reply

LOL you do realize she hit pretty much everything she came into contact with, right?

reply

The car never went dead on her... if you clutch quite fast especially under stress; you would have to turn the engine back on over and over.

reply

If she was driving an automatic it'd have been more believable, driving stick shift is much harder when you learn in an automatic, and in the US all driver's ed classes are in automatic shift. Yes, she hit everything, but she knew EXACTLY when to put the clutch in and out when turning, the car never stalled, it never even looked like she struggled with the gears!

For someone who drives stick shift, out of EVERYTHING else, this was the least believable thing.

WHAT THE FVCK IS A BIEBER????

reply

Most Mercedes Benz that are sold have automatic shift anyway, so I don't understand why they bothered with a manual shift car in the movie.

reply

Many Taxis around the world(Tokyo, Hong Kong, Moscow, ...) aren't standard vehicles. More often than not they're custom built or custom retrofit vehicles for taxi use only.

In Turkey most of our cabs aren't Mercedes. And our drivers don't like auto shift cars, generally women use them here. Also we used those police cars in 70s, not any more, even the police amblem were wrong. As much as I like Liam Neeson, I can't help but say that I hate most the fact that almost no women were shown in the film, like our women don't go outside; and about the ones we saw... well, very few women wear the black robes of cover nowadays in Turkey. However all of the women we saw in the movie were wearing them. In this age, are you (generally European and American people) still confusing us with the Arabic people? Yes we are Muslim and I even wear a headscarf but not like them. 'Extra info:The imam on the funeral at the beginning wasn't Albanian, he was definetely Turkish. And one more thing; why do these Albanian people speak English among themselves? Also the soccer play on Tv was in Turkish while the people watching it were speaking something I don't understand.

if you can't tell what a nested thread is, i'm the one who posted about custom taxis. not mercedes, not anything else about your women. so please learn to reply to the correct person.

She wasn't taking driver's ed, pay attention to the movie she was learning from her dad. Are you trying to tell me Cadillac didn't make a manual Escalade?

reply

"She hit everything she came into contact with"
Yes, that's generally how it works.

Funny!

She hit about everything, but the car looked about new at all times. They must have used about 15 cars, and/or pairs of side mirrors when playing this part.

reply

All we learned is that she failed because she couldn't PARK, not because she couldn't DRIVE. I think it was explicitly stated that is why she failed the test twice.

reply

Not being able to parallel park is not the same as not being able to drive

reply

She could drive. That wasn't the problem, the problem was she couldn't parallel park which was said - but yes the fact that she couldn't do that but could whip around those tight street corners at high speeds was ridiculous.

reply

Or that she could now drive a stick shift manual and drift 180s.

reply

LOL! Exactly!

reply

she could parallel park perfectly fine, she proved it to her dad in the beginning of the movie. she said the reason she screwed up on her driving test was because "maybe she didn't want a license" .. implying she intentionally did horribly

reply

oh right, so she secretly had all the abilities to be a Formula 1 Driver as we discover mid-way throught the film, but didnt want the burden of it all so pretended to not be able to parallel park!!! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

reply

americans mostly drive automatic cars, that merc had a manual gear wich is difficult even for most Europeans since the 1st gear is backwords rather that forward like 99.99% of the cars. And this girl who didn't had a license for an automatic car was running like a rally car driver in Istanbul.Insulting movie!

reply

This movie has a different director. That is why. This director did Transporter 3 and Columbiana.

reply

And you could tell...it was horrible!

Remember, Mills is ex-CIA with connections in France from the first movie. So when he has his friend call the Embassy to vouch for him, I'm sure the CIA personnel to the Embassy would be sympathetic to his plight and given him the different gun he had when he went back looking for his wife. I got a feeling with his connections they would have let him go.

It wasn't as if the movie was THAT much on track before this, but AFTER this I was literally just shaking my head going: "This makes no sense at all. This movie really sucks."

They were standing there because someone shouted out that it was suicide bombers, so they were not about to walk right up to the car. The part about being able to walk out after the destruction he wreaked is spot on though.

reply

According to this movie, speed of sound is ~1125 m/s (!), not 340 m/s.

Looks like they Googled it quickly and found 1,236 KM/h, but did not notice the KM/h part.
Apparently they forgot to convert it to M/s.

...and the scene where bad guys trapped his car in the street with a van and a SUV, the guy in the van opened fire on the windshield trying to kill him, but when they meet in the building after the chase, they decided to throw the guns away and fight just like in a Chuck Norris movie.

This movie is a total fail.

BTW Turkey and Albania has no borders, and if it had, I'm sure it wouldn't be just a wooden barricade with 3 guards.

reply

Synetech,

I didn't hear the suicide bomber comment. I'm glad you mentioned it. That part makes more sense now.

reply

I agree.
His plan of action was to escape the enemy by going head on with a weapon that could essentially obliterate him and his daughter instead?

I think the gun was more of a problem then escaping.

I guess Liam Neeson's character was whatever the story needed him to be.

Plus, the US embassy is not in Topkapi palace either.

"Plus, the US embassy is not in Topkapi palace either."

Plus, the US embassy is not located in Istanbul, but Ankara - hundreds of miles away. The first time he told her to go there, I thought she was going to take a bus or train. There is a consulate in Istanbul, though.

I pretend to work because the Soviet government pretends to pay me.

thought exactly the same thing, in "Taken" Bryan was calculated and methodical,he was like a terminator all his moves made sense. In this one he wasn't the same person.
He got kim to hide in his room in the closet where the villains will of course look for her, dumb.
He got kim to throw grenades 3 times, only checking for a safe place to do so the first time, dumb.
He allows Kim to run around on rooftops carrying grenades, (after telling her to blend in) while obviously going to be pursued looking for flags that are blowing a certain direction, how did he know which way the wind was blowing? Dumb.
Bryan from the original Taken would have had her get to safety at the embassy no matter what, no debate.
Also after they stopped at the embassy after being shot at why did the soldiers not descend on the car calling them to come out? Bryan has a whole conversation with kim, makes a phonecall and the next minute he's wondering around the area he was taken.
The whole film was ridiculous unlike the first where I just thought "wow"
you can pick this apart without even trying.

reply

yeah, not as solid as the first one, but still entertaining nonetheless.

It wasn't even that she couldn't parallel park...remember she said "Maybe I didn't really want my license" or something along those lines.

I haven't seen this movie yet but it sounds like bad Boys 2 where Will Smith and Martin Lawrence crash a Hummer into Guantanamo Bay and the soldiers actually are shooting at them.

And I thought Istanbul would have a consulate, not an embassy, since its not a capital city.

Guys, think about this. It was the heat of the moment. Neither character has their passports, identification or whatever so said proof could be used to prove their status as american citzens. Not only that, time wasn't truly in their hands due to gravity of the situation at hand. So what to do? Listen to Bryan Mills and just go dukes of hazard right through the embassy!

reply

[deleted]

The embassy should have cement barricades to prevent high-speed explosive vehicles. This entire scene, and everything about it was retarded.

Still a good action flick, but just one of the bunch.
