question about Diego (spoiler)

Gemma's father gives her the news he died, but in Italian and I missed it. Was he shot, or did he start using heroin again.

reply

Didn't he kill himself?

I like to think that he shot so much H he OD'd and simply fell off the cliff as he collapsed.

i also watched the movie in vo (version originale) with no subtitles so i also missed the italian - i took his suicide as:
-he felt too guilty about hiding while aska was raped
-he was overwhelmed by the war & humanity
-he felt guilty about leaving gemma with the baby

what do you guys think?

it's a dirty world Reich, say what you want

reply

I think it was stupido, like the rest of this forgettable piece of trash.

God might, I won't.

He felt guilty about his inability to help when aska got raped. But still wtf, he took aska to seashore, gave her a tattoo - hope for new beginning and jumped off the cliff. It doesn't add up to me. He must be selfish for not thinking about others involved in the situation. Some how all other characters made peace about his death, but that might be because they had too many loses that time to think anything.

he used to be a heroin addict before meeting gemma. there's a certain level of pain he couldn't cope with (as written before: he watched aska getting raped, left his wife all alone with a newborn, seeing that much killing from close distance) --> and that's when you have no other option but to turn to the golden shot. you just know when it's *the* time. he knew it'd be the best for everyone, that's all. maybe he didn't even walk off the cliff, but died at the top, but it's better for everyone to remember him as "falling off a cliff" than "getting overdosed". maybe it was just the father who made up the "he fell off the cliff" story for Gemma (if i'd hear such news, i'd definitely make it less shocking for my daughter and hope she'll never find out the truth)

Sometimes overdose just means addiction, but suicide is always traumatic. We keep wondering what would be the reason for our loved ones to leave us without telling us. I don't think jumping of cliff is better than knowing overdosed. Both are horrible and traumatic in their own ways.
