where was this movie filmed

I found the buildings and area the movie was set in to be quite compelling. There was one part in particular that looked like an abandoned industrial landscape (where they sneak off to do the deed and get spotted by the father) ... is that a real place in Edinburgh? Is that what a housing estate actually looks like, and is that the general climate? Thanks for any information, I am very curious!

The outdoor scenes were filmed in Edinburgh. All the indoor scenes were filmed in the West of Ireland. The weather is like that in Scotland, although no rain appeared when they needed it during filming. The flat complex was in Edinburgh as was the empty warehouse, the outside was used where they burned the van. Filming was for 5 weeks in Scotland and two weeks in Ireland. This was my son Nialls first feature film and his first time away from home living in Edinburgh for 6 weeks alone. He found the Scottish people very welcoming and the residents from the housing estate very accommodating. Hope this helps a little.

Other than the housing scheme areas it was filmed in and around a town called Dalkeith, which is seven miles South of Edinburgh-

Remember that the director was making a horror movie, hence the perpetual twilight and blue saturation. As you can see from the images on the wiki the sun does actually break through!

And the industrial areas were sets in the area of the Scottish Mining Museum

As for the housing area, I think it was an area that was in the South-side of Edinburgh that was a left-over from the '60s that was scheduled for demolition soon after.
