Flipping the bird

I realize this movie is about penguins, but why was Jim Carrey always extending his middle finger (flipping the bird) every time he was on the phone? It seems exaggerated and purposefully done.

It was his passive-aggressive way to show the middle finger to people while seeming completely innocent. Perfect for a snake-oil salesman, like Popper.

Watch the Seinfeld episode, where Seinfeld and George wonder if the waitress is secretly giving George 'the finger'. She is, and so is Popper.

Or maybe he's using some kind of masonic hand-sign.

Perhaps he's just massaging his temples, or some acu-points near them, to calm himself down or to balance his energies?

Well, that's all the answers I can come up with right now. I think the Seinfeld-style 'secret middle finger' is the most plausible one (although a combination of things can be true simultaneously).
