By avoiding sequels, is Carrey remaking the same film?

I started this movie on a plane and about 15 minutes in, I felt like I was watching Liar, Liar, Yes Man, A Christmas Carol, maybe Bruce Almighty a little (don't remember that one so much), where basically a successful man who isn't all that he can be is changed by some mysterious circumstance. I don't know the plot of Penguins, but it sure seemed like this super successful character would somehow mingle with penguins, realize family is more important than career, and so forth. He's made these films before.

I'm not saying Penguins isn't a good film. I turned it off because I wanted to watch something "new" at the time (formula-wise), but people here seem to stand by this film as a family-friendly flick, and I'm all for watching it when I'm in the right frame of mind.

But I also want Carrey to zing out a few sequels because his past characters are so darn original compared to some of his more recent output. I suppose he's balancing traditional films with more zanier or artsy things, which is probably a good career move. But I miss the cartoonish Carrey immensely.

Yes. I'm noticing that trend in his recent script selections as well, they're somewhat similar.

Another thing he tries to do is purposefully make up sayings. Like 'be-a-u-tiful' or 'yeahbsolutely' or whatever. It's better when those sayings are organic to the story, otherwise it sounds like he's trying too hard for something. Unfortunately when you're a physical comedian and you start to get older, it's time to do something else...

Hmm.. come to think of it, I'd definitely watch Ace Ventura 3, or Liar, Liar 2. But I don't think he can do it anymore - in a way, he has 'jumped the shark', and now he can only wait for the decline to reach its peak (or the bottom of his success), before vanishing from publicity altogether.

Him, not the peak.

What happened to Jim Carrey?

That's the question I asked, when watching this travesty, and getting déjà vu's all over the place. Father trying to help his kids but not understanding their problems, man getting his balls hurt, a businessman neglecting his family, 'wacky circumstances' changing his usual routine, making him appreciate the family, missing his ex-wife and having sappy things to say about her..

..it's like they wanted to make Liar, Liar 2, but for some reason, went for penguins instead.

But really, what happened to him? Ace Ventura was funny. His interview before he was famous, was also funny (he said he has practiced a lot in front of a mirror, etc., and he's ready to be picked up by hollywood, or whatever). His skits in 'In Living Color' were funny. Ace Ventura 2 was even funnier than the first one.

And then Liar, Liar had me laughing even more than both movies combined. Hilarious stuff, especially the outtakes (so much so, that it's easy to forgive the injected romance + syrup, and the bad acting when he's doing scenes with that talentless kid - it's almost as if he just can't act freely when there are kids present, or something - you see the same thing in this movie a bit).

But after that - what has he done that has been as funny and shining? Hmm, all I can remember are either really dumb things (yeah, let's not delve into that, some people liked that stupid movie for some reason), or pretty lackluster and mediocre stuff (Me, Myself and Irene - what an unbalanced, almost disturbing movie, Bruce Almighty with its cosmic amount of plotholes)..

.. or some feeble attempts at 'drama' - read, 'romance crap'. Like the 'Eternal Sunshide of the Spotless Mind' stuff. Boring and tedious, and not funny at all.

The only slightly better movie is of course 'The Truman Show', but even that show has so many plotholes and stupidities, that it's not even funny - not that it would be anyway, because it's just not humorous. When there's Jim Carrey in a movie, you were supposed to be able to expect it to be funny, but suddenly, it's just a mark of a movie being .. dreary?

WHAT HAPPENED to this guy? He used to _LIGHT_ a movie, make it shine!

Now he DIMS the movie, and makes it lackluster.

I'd rather watch a two-hour marathon of Ace Ventura's most primitive, childish and annoying jokes in a loop than watch any of the later attempts again, or this weird penguin-crap. Heck, Jim's 'talking buttocks' routine is more entertaining than anything in this Popper-movie.

What kind of a name is Popper anyway? Surely not Comanche indian.
