He Doesn't Defend His Dad Whatsoever

I'm in the middle of this movie and it's very reminiscent of "Back to the Future," except the son didn't defend his dad whatsoever and that bothers me. He sees his dad getting treated like crap, and he hasn't done anything to stop it. He just sits there and watches.
