THE BEST CHINESE MOVIE or THE BEST MOVIE?

Among all the movies you have watched, can you cite a movie which can compete with this one? I have watched a lot of movies. But to be honest, even those renowned Chinese movies like A Spring in a Small TOWN, Furong Town (directed by Xie Jin) are some way below it, I am afraid.

Comparing with other movies in the world, in my opinion AMADEUS is no better than this one. Chaplin's City Lights is of the same level with this movie.

Incredible movie from Feng Xiaogang!!! He has become a master of movie art!

For similar theme try Sunflower. Also from China.

Try Okuribito/Departure - Japan

For other chinese, try Hero, Crouching tiger hidden dragon, fearless, Curse of Golden flower,

If anyone hasn't seen ' To Live '

A Zhang Yimou film.

It's a much better film without the communist propaganda and the melodramatics.

Curse of the Golden Flower is one of my favorite movies!

Don't forget Raise The Red Lantern.

I am a native Chinese. To be honest, in my opinion Raise The Red Lantern told a story not quite familiar with most of native Chinese, though it may look quite appealing to western world. However, I am almost sure that millions of Chinese will resonate deeply with the story and emotion presented in Aftershock.

reply

I disagree. IMHO, I think “Raise the Red Lantern” is a much better film – in a total different level. I also disagree that it is made to target western viewers. It may have used more western technique stylistically but the story is purely Chinese. In fact, I think a non-native viewer may not be able to pick up some of the more intricate details.

On the other hand, I think Aftershock is very disappointing. As a disastrous movie, it is fairly unremarkable. The title of the movie seems to indicate this is not the intention. As a drama, it may have been limited by the source material. Nevertheless, Feng made it ends up as a melodrama is a real shame. There are bits and pieces of post trauma symptoms like survivor guilt. I simply do not feel much for the protagonist family. In fact, they are doing fine without much struggling. The end result is an uninteresting story. In contrast, the PLA couple seems much more human and real. I guess the two characters being played by good actor/actress also helps.

While I understand mainland Chinese director often needs to tread carefully around political subject, Aftershock’s over filtering made the film very dry. So dry that one can substitute Tangshan Earthquake with any natural disaster without seeing any difference. Still, I do appreciate Feng throwing Mao’s funeral in. The scene is a nice touch and a highlight of the movie.

Just finished watching the film. There were parts of it that were really well done, but man. The mellow drama could power the Hallmark channel for years.

Mostly terrific production values. A great middle section. A far too convenient end section and really distracting bad English acting. (I'm getting used to seeing it.)

Overall a solid movie that will hit harder with those who have sons and daughters.

6 / 10

Just saw this film on a big screen.
Blew me away! Completely puts the normal Hollywood drivel to shame.

But yeah - I have to completely agree about the bad English acting, the (thankfully short) scenes with the Canadian were horrible!

reply

Hahahaha that Canadian guy was hilarious.

I disagree that the protagonist family was doing ok. I mean, I like the fact that this movie had so many opportunities for melodrama, and did not take them.

1)One-armed kid becoming a loser?
2)Mom regretting her decision?
3)PLA couple getting in a fight over hot adopted daughter?
4)New romance for Mom?

I mean...there were a zillion things going on. They didn't put the Mom's guilt in our face, they made it a bit more subtle until the end. I was blindsided at the end. I was expecting some kind of forgiveness, but the other stuff crept up on me. The bit with the tomatoes was beautiful I thought.

Some other things were just....cute.

"Mom I left and started my own company?" What? What the hell can this kid do properly? Holy crap it's a tour bus company. I love that.

Also, the film gave a nice snapshot of China thru the decades.

Let me just say again, the English acting was fricking awful.

Oh! Was anyone else psyched when it turned out that Deng's kid was the cute girl, and not the Fugly kid who said he didn't break the plate?

I don't think the point of the movie was to dump us into conventional images of 'hardship.' I am glad it didn't do this.

"I want to eat a tomato."

Everybody likes the Shen.

It is a good movie, but you're right about the melodrama. I've seen it in a number of Chinese movies, so it's probably just the style that I disagree with. The scene when her brother is describing the earthquake to another aid worker was borderline farcical. And he his poetic language was over the top. Nobody talks like that, and it's unbelievable that the aid worker would listen quietly and sympathetically for such a long poetic speech. It felt like watching a play in which one of the characters has a soliloquy.

I'm sure that was intentional for style reasons, but it just felt contrived to me.

What? i think there are more decent chinese movies than americans.
Anyway, i saw a lot of movies, but Raise the red lantern is the best from my point of view. Crouching tiger hidden dragon is close. Beautiful hauntig stories and superb acting.
This one is rather melodramatic, 6/10

To be honest, I've seen a lot of great movies, but this one was seriously was far from the best. I got really bored, because the main girl's acting was basically cardboard. They just kept adverting anti-diahrrea and Chinese wine through out the film. And frankly too much was going on. And I don't like how they eluded that the father was a pervert, but was the nicest and best character on there. I just thought it was too much! And the white male actor was horrendous. I'm sorry, but they've done better work in China.

imo, america has never made a decent movie ever.
