a better director (and possibly writer) could have made twice as good a film
I can't agree,the movie concentrates on Drury's life,motivation and family rather than his career and is very successful in these terms.I thought that the direction was more than competent,the writing sharp and insightful and the performences,especially that of Serkis,spot on.

I was also impressed with the direction of this film. I've seen many disappointing musical biopics, and this is not one of them. If nothing else, it captures the "feel" of Ian Dury's music. I can't say I'm familiar enough with his life story to attest to its accuracy there.
In many ways, this feels like a music video for an artist whose music largely bypassed that era. The direction is extremely stylized and will probably put off some diehard fans while courting the more casual listener. I count myself among the latter, though this will cause me to add to my Ian Dury collection and learn more about the artist, so this film is successful in that regard.
