VERY disappointed

Overly manic, never slowing down enough to focus. Actually quite boring allot of the time. Loved Ian Drury's music and this film takes the magic and allure out of it. Sorry

Especially disappointed by the music played. The screen band just sounded like a crap punk band and serkis's voice hasn't got any of the nuances of Dury's. They'd have been better off cutting out all the live shows and just focusing on his amazing story and have the band itself backing.

Pretty *beep* to be perfectly honest.

The live recordings are not by the Blockheads according to the end credits. I agree, they have gone for energy and there is a loss of nuance. If you doubt this, check the many live recordings on youtube, and both singer and band consistently work contrast, light and shade, to create depth and subtlety in a way not represented on screen.

The same could be said for the film itself. There is no let up whatever; even the 'quiet' moments are filled with intensity and, well..earnestness.

Not a lot of genuine warmth or humour in this film. And however sympathetically it was intended to portray Dury, he comes out looking like a knob end. The film wallows in its own technical conceit and is cold.

I think he deserved better.

American Idol was conceived and created by a brit you condescending fish-n-chipper. That said, I hate it too. Dury was great, this film was very mediocre

I couldn't agree more, you hit the nail on the head it was manic and boring!

PLAY HOOKY!

I was disappointed and I have to say Serkis' hair really put me off as Ian only had it that length for short periods in his fame years and was usually seen wearing it far, far shorter, but Serkis' remained longer until the Spasticus Autisticus concert, which must have been at the earliest 1981. There were real inaccuracies in clothing of the changing periods, with cast members dressed in clearly early to mid-70s clothes in scenes supposedly in the early 80s. I also really do not like films that have just two volume settings i.e. really loud and barely audible. Checkout out this excellent live rendition of What a Waste (my favourite Dury song and totally ignored by this film) from the sadly short-lived Revolver in 1978.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRCKyX9BvEg

It was a bit one-paced but I forgave it when it showed Dury telling the contemporary bureaucrat where he could stick his patronising 'Does he take sugar?' atitude. Well done that man.

Yup, only caught the second half, but it looked a bit of a travesty. It was all so bloody miserable. I'm sure his life wasn't all sweetness & light, but his music was witty & comic; in the interviews I've seen he had a light-hearted approach to things & didn't take himself too seriously. There was none of this in Serkis' character at all.

reply

Only caught the second half? Then surely that disqualifies you from making any significant comment? If you only caught the first half of "Titanic", I'd love to read your review of that...

reply

So the first half was radically different? His character suddenly changed, is that what you're saying??

reply

As it happens, I only saw the second half of this, with no prior knowledge of Ian Dury.

INSPIRING.

The film is clearly a masterpiece.

I guess some people don't know what they have even when it's staring them in the face.

I absolutely loved the movie, thought it was fantastic, Andy Serkis was absolutely superb. I think this is one of my favourite films of all time.
