Bad movie, indeed

Let’s not get too much entangled in a debate about A- and B-movies because no one really knows what that means. Judging from the cast this movie is certainly not a B-movie.
The movie is about a bunch of antisocial, criminal thugs who kill each other in the most hideous ways, i.e. slicing open their stomachs or bashing their heads with a baseball bat. Subjects end up in pools of blood which spread at lightning speed, and defy all common physical and medical experience.
It all starts because of a lie of a desperate drug addict which starts an avalanche of violence, and culminates in a big showdown at the house of the head criminal who likes to think of himself as a shark.
This story is simple, too simple. The writer should either improve his writing skills dramatically or stop writing.

Fortunately, taste in movies is subjective. There are a lot of people who have enjoyed my writing. And, the fact that Paramount Studios liked it enough to finance the project, speaks volumes. I can respect your opinion, but for you to suggest I stop writing based on your opinion... That's pretty egomaniacal of you.

reply

did you write the part of Vincent with M. Ferrer in mind?

"Animals are beasts, but Men are Monsters..."

reply

No. The producers went out to other actors, as well. We were just fortunate to land someone with Miguel's level of talent. Cuba was attached from the beginning. Miguel and Harvey signed on just weeks before the project began filming. Val Kilmer had signed on briefly to play Nino, but that fell through. I was thrilled when I found out they had signed Keitel.

i think best chopices for Nino would have been:

Lance Henriksen
Christopher Walken
Michael Parks
Ron Perlman
or Powers Boothe

i watched the movie because Ferrer and Johnny Messner
are favorite actors of mine, and quite enjoyed it, good job with the script:)

"Animals are beasts, but Men are Monsters..."

reply

They did go after Walken, but I can't remember if it was for Nino or Vincent.

I would have been happy with any of the actors on your list. Good choices.

Eddie

thanx! as for Joshua, Cuba did great as far as Cuba goes,
but the part would have been better in the hands of someone else,
like:

Norman Reedus
Bill Moseley
Peter Outerbridge
Clifton Collins Jr.
Robert Knepper
Josh Brolin

but cuba was still ok, better than most of the stuff hes been making
lately. (this and Hero Wanted are the only great films hes been in
since American Gangster)

This had some of the same producers as 'Hero Wanted'.

This movie rocked. I just watched it over the weekend and man what a film. I'm not all that big of a Cuba Gooding Jr. fan but he was great. Miguel Ferrer I thought was the best part of the film. Kietel was also great but he always is. I know everyone is entitled to his/her opinion but for me this movie was very far from being bad. I gave it a 9 out of 10 stars on the IMDB scale.

If you are on the level and are the actual writer well my man damn good job.

I am, and thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Comments like yours help negate comments from the haters of the world.

Then I gotta say this - loved the Jaws references used in the film. That is one film my wife and I love to watch and we got a real chuckle when the two references were used in the film.

There are too many haters in the world and I swear most of them come on here to bad mouth something if not everything. When I watch a film I go in liking it. The film has to give me a reason not to like it. Whether its bad acting or a bad story or both or something else. But I end up liking more movies than I the ones I dislike. Probably why it is so hard to choose an absolute favorite film.

Hope you write more for films.

I set out to write the type of movie that I would enjoy watching. Coming from a theater background, my scripts are usually character and dialogue driven. I write characters that I would like to play, and dialogue I would like to say. In this ADD, special effect driven world that we live in, a lot of people don't have the imagination or attention span to wade into a story... They want to immediately cannonball into the deep end. I'm glad that you and your wife are waders.

Hello, Jason.

In my opinion, pirating movies is theft.

I, too, suffer from being nuts, with an over-active imagination.

Hope you enjoyed the movie.

Trolls need love, too.

I figure, if people are willing to take an hour and a half to watch my movie, the least I can do is respond when they give their thoughts on it. (If I recall, we were trading comments before the movie was even released.)

Hope you're doing well.

Loved the movie, a good gangster flick, loved the cast and well done acting by them. One of the few movies I will watch multiple times as the years roll by.

Fortunately, taste in movies is subjective.
That's for sure. I loved the film and gave it a 10/10, by the way.
for you to suggest I stop writing based on your opinion... That's pretty egomaniacal of you.
Agreed. It's ridiculous how myopic and self-centered some of these folks are.

Eddie:

First, my brother picked this up in a bargain bin at I think $3.00. It was worth ten times what he paid for it...at least.

This is what I like about good writing. I have seen literally hundreds of "gangsta" movies over the years. Just about every thing filmed from the thirties on.

I did not know where this thing was going most of the time. I was almost certain that Joshua and Vincent were going to make it. I was wrong. I was almost certain that Vincent wouldn't go after Nino. I was wrong. Most of the time I had no idea what was going to happen next. This made it more than worth watching.

This is what I like about good writing. The film surprised me a number of times and I genuinely did not know where it was going until it got there. It should have done better at the box-office. It was a very good film and it is now in my list of top Noir films of any decade.

Watta ya lookn here for?

Johnny B Lately,

Thank you for checking it out, and for the kind words. I need to start fishing around in those bargain bins. I loaned all my copies out and never got them back.

I used to do that with books. Let me stress the "used to."

Well, sure you had to lend them out. Hope you've got some other things in the works. This business needs imaginative writers good writers. Break a leg as they say out here.

I liked this film. A no-brainer, just good entertainment. A-N-D a decent script. This is one of the better GUNS, DRUGS & THUGS film. Agree with you 100%, eddienick96, taste is movies is very, very subjective. BTW, just saw this on netflix April 2, 2015.

Excellent, glad you liked it. My wife didn't even like it. Too violent, I guess. πŸ˜€

Just watched it on Film 4 here in the UK - midnight movie - an unexpected treat !

I liked it a lot : tight , moody , minimalist , but perfectly paced .

I'm usually easily distracted by my PC at this time of night but i turned it off so i could pay attention and i'm glad i did . Without * spoiling i liked the premise - plenty of junkies end up effecting/affecting the world around them like that - brilliant - thanks .

I don't want to spoiler things, and I think the movie was very good, however the last thing got a bit amused. You see, when Joshua was in the car he realised that it had been Vincent who had shot his father... Joshua suddenly remembered that at the end of the movie, not earlier in his life with Vincent, and it seemed awfully strange to have done that in this particular moment. It seemed, that you, Eddie, wanted to finish the movie with a bang.

That's only my opinion, I still liked the screenplay and the fact that you didn't stop at times when most of the screenwriters would.

Cheers to Poland.

Thanks for posting. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. The director actually added the bit about Vincent killing Joshua's father. I never did like that. Originally, Vincent and Joshua had much more of a father/son relationship, and Joshua didn't put the gun to Vincent's head at the end.

They are [ spoiler ] and [ /spoiler ]. Just take the spaces out and it will work. Like this.

To be honest, that was my main problem with the film, the ending. Also the hand to hand combat moment. Glad this was not your doing, it must be frustrating to have people presume it's all down to you. I was enjoying the film until those moments!

reply

Just seen Wrong Turn at Tahoe on the television.
Spot on ReddPeggy. The movie was exactly how I like them, dark, heavy and realistic. And then all of a sudden, Joshua tosses the gun to do some "oldfashioned way" fist fighting. Jeesh. And the ending, making no sense. Those two were sticking out of othervise perfect movie.

Other than that - 10/10

To each his own, I didn't mind the fight scenes or the ending that much. Very good flick, very good performances.
