My take on this movie...

My theory of why they felt so bad after, besides the obvious reasons is that they actually were aroused by the situation after awhile. Human beings are basically animals and I think even under gun point their physiological responses started kicking in. The guilt was for being aroused and not understanding that is just something that happens sometimes. As far as what happened at the end when the brother snaps, I think he felt that he needed to take control, because he lost control in the beginning. But the ending would have been more realistic if he had just done something really drastic and ended his suffering in a much more complete way.

@tomarx7: You write, "But the ending would have been more realistic if..."

This was based on a true story and the siblings recount it this way. So it is very realistic in that sense. But I think I know what you're trying to say - that it would've been more satisfying as a film if the brother had done something drastic to end his suffering (suicide or ?). We know that the "drastic" and violent thing he did at home, did not end his suffering...it only made it worse for him and, obviously, his sister.

Very sad turn of events. I hope he didn't go on to hurt more women. I'd like to think that he got serious help before his brain completely hard-wired. This may be the case, since both brother and sister seem willing to tell their harrowing true story.

At least, I hope that's the case. On the other hand...maybe this is just the sister's account.

From what I have seen in the real world, this movie illustrates the divergent realities of sex for men and women. I have stayed in touch over the years with quite a few of the women that I dated from my past, and our memories of the sexual stuff we got into were amazingly different. I think for men, there is no "bad" sex. However for women if the sex does not lead into a relationship, they tend to downplay and fuzzy up the actual events. So that is one of the reasons this movie ends up with the brother completely freaked out. If he was really a virgin and this was his first full out sexual event. It potentially could mess up his life forever. For the sister, since she already had obviously been with men before, the sex of course did'nt affect her as much. That is one reason people with a lot of partners have a much harder time making real connections with anyone before and after sex. On some level I wonder if she should have tried to seduce him later and imprint some good memories of non forced and a sexual experience based on actual emotional bonding instead of a mechanical act filled with guilt and confusion?

Now that would have been an interesting twist that likely would have generated a fair amount of discussion on these boards. I also think it would have been a much better way for the movie to go than Daniel melting down into violence..
