I think a franchise could be based on Det Loki,,,

Cool, a deep texture character. Puzzling at times. Loads of room to work with on other films.

They gave one to Alex Cross so I don't see why not.

A couple of friends and I (we are all lawyers) were having fun watching this movie together because of all the things Detective Loki did wrong (he violated the 4th Amendment repeatedly throughout the movie and some of that evidence he obtained wouldn't be admissible in most courts because of the fruit of the poisonous tree doctrine). So if they were to make a sequel to Prisoners or a franchise based on Detective Loki, I do think they should address the fact that he breaks almost every procedure in the book and obtains a lot of his evidence unlawfully. For Prisoners, it didn't matter because the span of the movie was not long enough for him to really face the repercussions of breaking procedure.

I think that's one of things that made his character so compelling. He did very few things right in the investigation and jumped to a lot of wrong conclusions. Yet we are informed that he had solved every case. He was obsessed and worked tirelessly, yet he solved the crime and was the hero due completely by chance.

reply

Yeah, the way I read him, he won his cases not by solving the crimes with genius but by sheer persistence.

As Thomas Edison said:

"Genius is one percent inspiration, and 99 percent perspiration."

That's the thing about inadmissable evidence though -- if you shoot the perpetrator, there's no trial.

reply

They should. I liked the character

reply

Would have made a good show. There are so many bad ones out there.

He was the dark knight of detectives. Really liked his quirks, anti-social mannerisms & lonerism. He just did what he wanted to do, without much regard to fellow workers or the parents.

reply

I thought it was really cool that he didn't give up on finding the girls and he ends up saving his daughter in the end

After I first saw this I thought that I'd like to see more Detective Loki films. You find out very little of him throughout the film, which I thought was good. I liked Jake's performance as him, his quirks, and his seeming detachment to a lot of the world. I think he has just the right air of mystery to him, and bits and pieces could be revealed somewhat over time, kind of like Preston & Child's Agent Pendergast.

I think he'd have to somehow end up getting a job with the FBI or State Police though, because having a bunch of films where he solves mysteries in the same town would get kind of boring.

And maybe more about his upbringing

Yeah I'd love to see JG play Det. Loki again. I really enjoyed Prisoners, his character was by far my favorite part. I'm a big JG fan, I liked his look in Prisoners and I liked his actions/mannerisms even when he made mistakes.

They should make another one where Loki's investigation has him team up with FBI or some whatever agency to get a serial killer who's killed across 8 states in his region or something, and the latest kill was in his town. Since he's solved all his cases ever given to him (if that's true and not just something the Captain told Keller's wife) he travels with the FBI to try and track down the killer. I would love to see how he'd interact with them, it's too bad it probably won't happen..

(My plot outline was influenced by another commenter who said it would be boring to see Loki investigating the same town as in Prisoners)

I would like that. Gyllenhaal does some good movies and maybe Loki gets like a love interest in like two or three movies, maybe a movie trilogy

To be honest, the only odd/quirky thing I found about Det Loki's personality was the stupid looking buttoned up shirt without a tie! Most young guys now don't bother about a tie, but the top buttons are always undone. On Loki, this just seemed "Hey look at me, I'm weird, brilliant and unconventional", a bit like the nerdy guy in Criminal Minds. And if he's so smart, why did he ask Alex, who has the IQ of a 10 yr old "Did you participate in the abduction..... etc etc, very sophisticated vocab for a supposed 10yr old!

Seemed to me like he was trying to maybe cover up his tattoos.

True Detective season 3.

I'm still praying for that to happen since Bale and Gyllenhaal are my dreamcasts for the detectives!
