Question about the abductions *SPOILERS*

It's a fairly simple one, what was the purpose of the child abduction and murders to the elderly couple? The priest states he killed the man because he admitted to murdering 16 children in confession and would kill more. The Aunt had obviously kidnapped at least a further 2 children (Anna and Joy) after her husband's disappearance , but what was the couples continual motive? There didn't seem to be any obvious hint to molestation, just puzzle/snake torture followed by death.

I feel like I may have missed something obvious that fits it all together, but perhaps it's to do with losing their son at an early age and a twisted satisfaction in seeing other parents grief? Any thoughts?

Well, this isn't much of an answer but in the trivia section it said that scenes suggesting paedophilia were cut from the film, so that may have been the original motive for the writer.

Didnt the lady say that she was devout and then she lost her son to Cancer and that turned her and her husband against God. Also the Priest says the man was waging a war against God,
Something the women repeats at the end, that by taking children and murdering them she was turning the parents against God.

reply

Basically they were at war with GOd because their son died of cancer

By taking peoples children they were making them lose faith and becoming demons like Keller. Keller became someone else and torture Alex.

She explains this when she forces Keller to move the car.

reply

The one thing I don't get is why they left the kids alive for so long.
