I totally agree!! Throughout the whole film I was thinking "well they're blatantly alive somewhere, because the film is called "prisoners". I guess it could have been metaphoric or something, but I think the title in itself is a bit of a spoiler.

Yep, it's metaphoric in a way because several characters could be called prisoners. First there's the girls, obviously. Detective Loki is prisoner to his job. He spends Thanksgiving alone, doesn't have a wife or kids, but never failed to solve a case. Then, Alex is Keller's prisoner.

I think you could call Keller a prisoner too, but I'm not exactly sure of what. His family maybe? He's a survivalist with a basement full of supplies and will go as far as torturing a mentally-challenged man to find his daughter alive. The movie says his father committed suicide, so my guess is he doesn't want to "fail" his children the way his father failed him.
