I'm not Alex - spoilers

When Alex is trapped in the box and Keller turns off the hot water, Alex whispers something along the lines of "I'm not Alex". This, we find out later, is because he was the abducted child Barry, whose mother detective Loki visited earlier on in the movie.

He also says something like "I waited and he never came. I just wanted to play and he never came".
Who is this in regards to? I didn't get this at all.

Does anyone know or have an idea? Sorry if this has been asked before and I have missed the thread.

Thank you

I think the "I waited and he never came" line is probably Alex referring to one of Holly's other kidnap victims, maybe Bobby Taylor who was around the same age. Alex was the first child that Holly and her husband took and it seems like after they had him brainwashed and under their control, they used Alex as a lure.

So for example, Alex might have had instructions from his Aunt to bring other children to the house to play. In Alex's childlike mind, he probably thought he was just playing with the two girls when they went for a ride in the RV and sang the Jingle Bells song. But all the children who Alex was supposed to go home and play with would disappear instead. So when Alex says this under torture I think he's saying he just wanted another kid to play with. But these other kids "never came" to play. Once they got to the Aunt and Uncle's house they'd be put in the hole. Alex either didn't witness what happened to the other victims or he was drugged so he didn't remember. He only remembers he was supposed to play with another kid and the other kid didn't show up.
