Is this his best role or is it nightcrawler? Nocturnal animals and zodiac aren't far behind though

He was great in End of Watch.

I actually thought that he was kinda tame in Prisoners, and I think he is an excellent actor.

Brokeback Mountain, Nightcrawler, Velvet buzzsaw, Enemy and Donnie Darko (even though I didn't care much about the movie itself) are far better performances in my opinion.

You also mentioned Zodiac, and yes I absolutely loved the movie and his performance... I simply don't put it among my favourites (ironically, the movie itself is definitely among my top 3 of his movies).

I would say it’s in his top 10, no doubt about that.

But since I’m of the opinion that Jake has a number of equally amazing roles+performances, personally it’s difficult to single out any of his roles. Although... while the guy has come a long way, his iconic Donnie Darko role remains special.

At any rate, Gyllenhaal is fantastic as Detective Loki. Even when the thundering presence that is Hugh Jackman is commanding the screen (such electrifying intensity), Gyllenhaal manages to hold your attention. Magnificent acting from top to bottom.
