The whistle in the end (spoilers ahead)

Am I the only one here that thinks Keller Dover was not rescued in the end (at least not alive)?

Loki thinks he heard a whistle, but after some moments his facial expression shows that he dismisses it as a product of his imagination.

What do you think?

reply

I was also left with the impression he wasn't found.

reply

Maybe there are two endings, a la Blade Runner.

The one I saw, he dismisses it and starts to walk, then hears it a third or fourth time and turns toward the Trans Am.

That made me think he WAS rescued. Maybe just a happy ending for the US?

I also felt, when he found the whistle earlier, that it would be his salvation at the end. Otherwise, why bother? Everything else in the movie is so well foreshadowed.

reply

He WAS found. Three times he hears, once he dismisses and the last two times he knows he clearly hears it. So yes, he'll dig up and find him.

reply

He doesn't have to dig. Just remove the Trans Am. But you're right, he's found. Loki always solves his cases as mentioned earlier in the movie. ;)

Caesar. Is. Home.

reply

I think he was found, in the version I saw, he only dismisses the sound of the whistle the first time. If they had wanted to indicate he wasn't found, they would have filmed the detective walking out of frame and then one last whistle sound - or something similar.

reply

The last whistle definitely caught Loki's attention. Besides, in Loki's last conversation with Dover's wife, he says that Dover will probably go to jail for what he did to Alex. I think it's the writer's way of indirectly telling us what's going to happen to Dover.

reply

Same here. I was upset by the abrupt ending that left me with the impression that the detective was shaking his head and telling himself he was imagining heading things. Apparently, he was hearing the sound of the whistle that his daughter had left in the hole earlier, which had been foreshadowed earlier when the father first went down in the hole and discovered it. I suppose it's up to the viewer to assume the detective eventually found the father, since he seemed pretty perceptive throughout the entire film. It would have been unbalanced in his character had he not discovered the father after all his persistence in the case.

just finished watching it. in my version.which i assume is the only one out and the original one lomi hears it dor the third times and turn around toward the trans am. its pretty clear he is going to find hime. indeed we hear a closing noise similar to the moving of the hole cover.
sorry for the damn typos

The movie clearly implied that the father will be found. But I wish they had left it a bit more ambiguous. They should have let us (the audience) hear the whistle but leave it unclear as to whether the detective heard it. That would have been a perfect ending. But the movie was close to perfect, anyway.

Ηe clearly was found
