The 'don't bash it, it's made for kids' argument

This is one I tend to see a lot, not just with the Nostalgia Critic, but even when professional critics pan a film intended for children, so I thought I'd throw in my two cents.

Yes, I know that children's movies are intended for different audiences, but you can still have a well-made children's film that doesn't rely too heavily on whimsical pandering or unfunny slapstick. Most, if not all, Pixar films understand this, as did the makers of Coraline, Where The Wild Things Are, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. The makers of Secret Of NIMH 2, A Troll In Central Park, The Neverending Story 3, Alpha And Omega, Maramduke, and Cats And Dogs 2 did not. They seemed to be part of the "Oh, it's a kids' film. It's not like we have to put any effort into it" mindset.

So, if we can pick apart the story and characterization flaws in films intended for adults, why can't we do the same for films intended for children? Kids deserve to have good movies just as much as anybody else. They should have films that invoke a sense of imagination and adventure (You know, things kids like) rather than talking down to them and treating them like they're too stupid to understand complex matters.

Of course, there are films like Care Bears 2 that aim for a much lower demographic, but seriously, I think even five year olds would probably feel insulted at the sight of floating hearts and stars with faces.

Bottom line: kids' films are about as fair game as everything else. When somebody like NC picks apart a kids' film, they're usually asking more than 'Is this a good movie?" They're asking "Is this a movie kids should be watching when there's better alternatives out there?"

But that's just my opinion. What do you think?

PS: Looks like creamfilling16 is on the run. Oh well. Cue her and another one of her crazy psychobabble rants.

I hate when people say "it's for kids" as an argument. There's alot of good kid movies. There are alot of bad kid movies. Same go with good and bad movies mad for adults.

Nice new post with a reply that's an insult, ebertfan92, especially one that proves nothing.

In my opinion this film was far better than both Coraline and Where the Wild Things Are.

@JrnlofEddieDeezenStudies, Now you're talking! I haven't seen those, but I still agree (from the trailers, they didn't look like my type). Plus, Marmaduke is more kid-friendly than Coraline and Where the Wild Things Are.

reply

@JrnlofEddieDeezenStudies you need to see a therapist if you thought Marmaduke was better than Coraline. Coraline was richer than Marmapuke.

It's the sort of thing you believe one can be wrong about?

Because you're a fan of stupidity.

The Nostalgia Critic is a terrible actor making terrible jokes about terrible acting, who gives a *beep* what he thinks.

My son loves it so i'm going to stick with that argument

Kids movies can be fluffy and funny without a deep story (although that is a major plus), but they need to follow the same criteria that movies for older audiences follow. There should be a plot and characters that go through an arc. There needs to be a logic to it, because believe it or not, kids can analyze things too. I find it insulting that family movies have to be about a stupid talking dog and dumb 'hijinks' for it to be considering enjoyable to kids.

on the other side of the coin, not every kids movie needs to be toy story 3...sometimes a light hearted kids film, is just that.

reply

Marmaduke okay if you just take 1 hour or so just relaxe watch the movie

Watching Marmaduke is the same as being slapped in the face with a giant dead fish. It's disgusting and painful.

Or getting cock slapped by a 10 inch dick that hasn't been washed in a month.

Except these sorts of kid movies aren't even lighthearted. They're poorly made and thought out, created by hacks who think idiot parents and their children won't know the difference between something like this and a better made film. And sometimes, they are right.

But the characters in Marmaduke do follow an arc - the father learns to listen to his kids (doesn't realize his son didn't want to play soccer until the end of the movie) and Marmaduke learns to not turn his back on his friends.

I'm an adult, just finished watching the movie, and enjoyed it. It looks like it was produced with younger children in mind - it refrains from 'dark' moments, doesn't put any of the characters in real danger, has an upbeat message (stay true to your friends, even if they're mutts rather than purebreds), and the dad and Marmaduke are wiser at the end than they were at the beginning.

Except it was a shallow character arc that didn't really connect any dots or follow through on its development very well. It's also not the focus of the movie.
The 'hijinks' are what the movie spends most of its time on.
