Imperator Furiosa = Mad Max

She was the Mad Max character. This was one of the first gender replacements of established white male characters. They did it in a tricky way, though.

Imperator (a Roman leader, implying one who has maximum powers, also Maximus, Max for short.)
Furiosa (Furious = Mad.)

They just had the male Mad Max standing around doing nothing because they were afraid to just go all out full female remake.

Pretty much. And that's why it sucked.

If they had been upfront about what it was, or if they had at least bothered to make her somewhat interesting, as opposed to a cardboard cutout of a character that can be described in its entirety as "has a robotic arm and scowls all the time", I might have actually liked it.

Well, it's not literally like you translated it but it's an interesting find you made there about the name replacement.

The character was obviously replacing the main one, as the guy they say is Max has got nothing to do with Max.
But it's worth to ruin the franchise namesake cuz they had SUCH AN ORIGINAL idea: let's have a woman be the tough guy in this one! You know? -A WOMAN-! Those beings with pussies!!! You get what I'm saying even if it's such an outlandish concept?!?! Wow, what a genius idea I have here!!!!! We're going down in history with this one!!!

Yes, I admit it's not a literal translation, but it's close enough to be a coded replacement for the name Mad Max.
