To See This Again in a Theater...

Fury Road was one of the most intense and enjoyable theater experiences I've had since... I don't know when. The previous century, most likely. What I wouldn't give for a chance to see it another time on a big screen with a thunderous (furious?) sound system.

reply

The opposite reaction for me, could not believe how bad it was. Non existent plot and just non-stop action like a Transformers film.

reply

It's one thing to say you disliked a film for some particular reason or reasons, but when a film is as unequivocally revered as a masterpiece by critics and audience alike, to equate it with trash-level pablum like Transformers... well, everyone's entitled to an opinion, and to their own artistic tastes and preferences, but I can't help but question how discerning your tastes are if you equate Fury Road to a Transformers movie. I suppose to some, Casablanca is just boring, poorly acted melodrama no different from a Tommy Wiseau film, and it's fair to say that those "some" are lacking the ability to discern good from bad.

Equally surprising is that someone who didn't enjoy Fury Road is not a fan of Transformers. ;)

I hope all of that wasn't rude or harsh... we both clearly hate Transformers, so there's that. Respectfully, may I ask what you consider to be some of the better-made action/thrilling movies of all time?

reply

i can understand why people would like transformers movies. i might love them if they were 90 mins and not bloated runtimes. Frankly Fury Road was disappointing after the Mel Gibson classics , one might say the original Mad Max was boring also, but it at least gave us the history of Max and what drove him.

reply

The second Mad Max movie is the best of the bunch, it's also a Mel Gibson one... Has a bit of story, but the thrills were a level higher than in Fury Road...

Yeah, I can see the parallels between the better Transformers movies and Fury Road...

reply

The second film is definitely the best of the first three, and a classic in its own right. I think Fury Road is every bit as good, though they're quite different films. I also think I'm prone to give The Road Warrior a bit of a pass here and there, because it has history on its side, in much the same way I cut any flawed classic some slack.

reply

As much as I surprisingly dislike Casablanca, Space Odyssey, Transformers and Furby Road and as much as I appreciate Road Warrior, Eyes Wide Shut and Le feu follet - I still am unable to join the conversation for a simple reason of not knowing what pablum means. No luck and No Orchids for Miss Blandish this time ((

Agreed. This is like comparing The Shindler's list to Pearl Harbor, or Lord of the Rings to In the Name of the King. Yeah, I'll get that you have the right to your opinion to not like both movies... But will question your intelligence if you state that you didn't like them because "they are the same kind of movie".

reply

I agree, it is like a Transformers film.

I feel the same way. Very rarely you see a movie in a theater and have an experience as enjoyable as I had with Fury Road. It was a blast. I actually saw it on my birthday and my friend paid for the ticket as a present to me, so that makes it even more memorable.

I've seen it many times now on blu ray and I still get a kick out of it. But now I'm interested in seeing the black and chrome version.

reply

I'm curious snout the Black & Chrome version as well

reply

It's hard to get a hold of, I really don't want to buy another blu ray just for it. Anyway I'd had to import it so it would be pretty expensive.

reply

Yeah this is one movie I need use my projector to watch again. The best part about it is actually the speakers I use, they are remarkably clear (without sacrificing bass or richness) and they sound a lot better than theater speakers.

reply

What sort of projector/screen/amp/speaker setup do you have?

reply

Nothing crazy, I go for bang before buck. I use an Optoma projector I've had for at least 5 years now, it's only 720p but the picture is beautiful and I also got the box for it that makes it 3D-capable and controls the LCD glasses.

My personal preference is a short throw, I don't want the picture size to hurt the brightness. It's probably about 10 feet from the projecting surface, and I've measured the picture size at 82 inches diagonal. The brightness and clarity at that size makes the picture look like a huge HDTV, and you don't lose any detail from dark areas of the image.

My other secret is that I project it on a dry erase marker board. The surface has a nice reflective quality, it has a dark wooden frame that gives a great border to the image, and it's almost the same aspect ratio as the full frame of the projector. PLUS, best of all, it was free, because a friend left it behind and had no way to store it.

I'm more of an audiophile than anything, so I spent my time finding the right pair of speakers, which ended up being recommend to me by an actual sound engineer (the kind of guy willing to drop a thousand bucks on headphones, which is crazy to me).

I've had them for about five years as well, got them not too long after the projector. They are a set of Creative's T20 speakers. They also say "Series II" on the back, but T20 is the model number. I think they're discontinued now, replaced with a new model, but I could be wrong.

They're not expensive, they were $50 brand new when I got them, but they really are one of those random amazing sets of speakers that come out of nowhere. You might see that in the reviews if you happen to look them up. Very loud, very nice balanced range of highs and lows, and just incredible clarity. I've noticed little details in the background of the soundscape from movies, the kinds of details that usually take headphones to hear. Plus, echoes and environmental sounds actually separate out realistically.

Highly recommended!

Thank you for that. It sounds like you're using only two speakers for standard stereo. Do you have a subwoofer, or anything else, or do you get great sound from only those two speakers?

I'm have an adequate setup for my apartment, but I'm planning to purchase a house in a year's time, and that will be when I upgrade, so I really appreciate your in-depth response.

reply

No I don't use a separate sub. The T20s have subs built in that point upward. The only bad thing is that dust gets down in those holes so easily.

reply

I looked at them on Amazon. They are so inexpensive, and intended to be used as computer speakers. If they are as good as you say, that's a great find. I need computer speakers anyway, and can easily justify the purchase, which will allow me to audition them as home theater speakers. Thanks! :)

This is something I have been wishing for for the longest time.

As much as I enjoy watching films at home, certain films are just made to be watched in theaters, particularly in large format screens. Fury Road? It is hands down one of the ultimate!

Intense is one way to describe experiencing this film in a top-notch screen (IMAX for me).

I hope that comes to the Bay Area. May even be worth a trip to LA. Thank you for the link!

Jeez... I regret so much not seeing this one in the teather. When it came, I had not even seen any Mad Max movies, so didn't have much interest in it. Of course I regretted it the moment I saw it on DVD. And then... Watched the whole franchise lol.
