Hunger Game Readers- Ever hear of BATTLE ROYALE?

So I keep seeing you guys post about The Hunger Games and I googled it and read a snippet from Wikipedia... and I think this is the book my friends and I were guffawing about a few years ago that sounded like a rip off of Battle Royale (which has been one of my most favorite horror books since..forever).

Now, I didn't read too much in the Wikipedia because if its not, I might be interested in reading it and don't want to spoil too much.. but here's a general synopsis from Wikipedia's article about BR which I'm too bothered with other stuff to write on my own

According to the rules, every year since 1947, 42 third-year high school students are isolated, and each student is required to fight to the death until one student remains. Their movements are tracked by metal collars around their necks, which contain tracking and listening devices; if any student should attempt to escape the Program, or enter declared forbidden zones, a bomb will be detonated in the collar, killing the wearer. If no one dies in a 24-hour time period, there will be no winner and all collars will be detonated simultaneously.

To be honest, my wife's mother is a "Middle School" English teacher. Every time she comes to visit she often has another book to talk about and I was sick of feeling out of the loop. So I read the entire Hunger Game series in 2 or 3 days...

Your 'friends' are all your own sock puppets, so it is not surprising that they agree with you.

I can almost believe that your mother is an English teacher, given that your grammar and spelling are among the best on IMDB.

Beyond that...lying; stupid; insane. No other possibilities. Seek help.

reply

How is pointing out plagiarism considered to be stupid, insane or a lie, though. Just because you disagree with things based on the very tennents of Reality?

Seek help.

reply

Why did they rebrand the new Battle Royale 2: Requiem as "The Mockingjay"?, though, thats the real answer I came here to seek...

Professional help.

So the "Mockingjay" phrase wasn't a YA ripoff of BR2's "Wild Seven", simply replacing a masculine term with a more feminine one, to appeal to the teen female demographic, which ultimately resulted in Lion$gate's bankruptcy, despite their announcements involving "themeparks" and "celebrity world tours", which never actually came to fruition anywhere expect in the imaginary reality of the "Hunger Games" app?

reply

This is The Hunger Games board.

If you wish to discuss BR2 rip-offs, I would suggest you go to the Catching Fire board, or either of the two Mockingjay boards...

Pretending to argue with yourself while actually saying exactly the same thing...lame. You either think everyone else is stupid, or this all just another part of your delusion. Get a qualified therapist.

How is suggesting that folks go to the proper boards for the proper ripoffs construed to be any other than a helpful suggestion? I certainly didn't mean come off as argumentive :)

Battle Royale is a fantastic flim, based on a novel. Haven't read the book. But the film has had a sort of "cult" following in the U.S. for quite a long time now. It didn't get an official American release until fairly reacently. Prior to that it was all fansubs and imported DVD's.

The story is good, though truthfully there is not as much story as The Hunger Games. There are a lot of similarities, # of survivors, the killing, the political unrest, the people sent in to stir stuff up (similar to the careers). But that's about it really. The stories, whle similar, are also very different. Especially in terms of design.

Battle Royale is BLOODY. I mean really over the top bloody. And the deaths are a LOT more gruesome overall. There's no training for this, these are jr. high kids straight off their field trip bus. No forewarning. Nothing. Just here you go, you all have to kill each other, only one survivor. If there's more than one person alive at the end of the time limit (3 days) your necklace trackers explode and you all die. HAVE FUN! and then they get a bag with a "weapon" to get rid of any natural advantages. You'll have a fat kid who might be first pickings with a cross bow, meanwhile someone out and ready to kill gets a paper fan. So it's interesting to watch it unfold in that sense. You don't get a lot of that with The Hunger Games. Also 42 students instead of 24, so a lot more killings to get through.

Good movie, not for everybody. Not even everyone who likes The Hunger Games would like it, but I throughally enjoyed it. And truthfully, before I read the Hunger Games books and had just saw the first movie the words out of my mouth were "So...they just ripped off Battle Royale?" Which I realize now is not really true, but the similarites are startling at first glance.

All the blood aside there is a redeeming underlying story, and there are several characters who get fleshed out. There's a lot going on and lot more people in Battle Royale are willing to try to NOT kill each other and instead find another way out. You've got a group of computer hackers, some school girls trying to work things out, a few lovers suicides, the whole deal. As far the the BATTLE part of the story goes it is more fleshed out than The Hunger Games. If you can handle blood and gore and also subtitles (the fillm is in Japanese) then I do recommend it. But note that while similar in some ways it is NOT the Hunger Games and it was deemed inappropriate for teeangers (the intended audience of The Hunger Games) many many times in many different countires.

Good movie. One of my favourites.

In other words, two totally different stories. At last, an admission of reality.

Your opinion of their relative merits is your own personal issue, as long as you get past this rip-off delusion.

Perhaps all these debates with yourself have actually helped you to see the light.

Glad to see the healing has begun.

Why did they replace all the violent stuff from BATTLE ROYALE with stuff from TWILIGHT in this remake, anyway?

reply

Yes I've heard of battle Royale and it's several times better

reply

No, I haven't heard of Battle Royale. I mean it's not like this board has been bombarded with thread after thread regarding some Japanese novel/film that the Hunger Games probably ripped off. Battle Royale? What is that? I'm afraid I've never heard of it, you see, not enough trolls have come and constantly remind me how much better it is, nope, this board is completely active, peaceful and troll free!??
