It looks like a backwards version of Inglourious Basterds where the Nazi's won and the parts are played by stuffy actors, (minus Michael Sheen, he gets a pass, the guy is one of the best actors in the world, even if he occasionally does drivel like this, Twilight and the Underworld movies). It looks offensive, illogical and unnecessary.
Convince me otherwise.

Theres no soldiering going on.
This is basically "Husband leaves wife alone, stranger ingratiates himself on wife, should wife run off with him?"
It could have been told against any number of back drops.
