What happened to his wife?

I don't recall them explaining what happened with his wife? Is she dead? Did she leave him before the attack?

I believe it was implied that she had divorced him years before, probably in no small part due to his alcoholism.

I missed that implication and though that this was an obvious question that should have been addressed.
