how do these games work?

Sorry to be so ignorant but i have never played any of these 'music games', so i was wondering how the gameplay works. Do you have to hit right notes or what? Do you pick a particular instrument with each song?
I was very interested in getting this game as i love The Beatles.

Hopefully this link clears some of your confusion. Just remember that for Beatles Rock Band you can have 3 singers instead of just 1, this is unique for this game.
Then I suggest you look up gameplay videos on youtube to see what they are talking about. The games are not really difficult to get into. I only started playing them last year. I started on easy guitar/bass which is when you only use 3 of the 5 buttons. After a few days I moved onto medium which uses 4 of the 5 buttons. Now I play mostly hard and expert which both modes use all 5 buttons.

- A guitar and bass controller are the same thing. You can use the same controller for both parts.

If you don't like the idea of playing plastic instruments, this game doubles as a karaoke game if you just do the vocals. The only difference is you are given a score on your singing.

If you have other questions, I'd be glad to answer them. :)

Thanks for the help. Does the 'singing' mode mean its just your voice like on a karaoke or are you singing along with the singer on the game?

There is an option to turn down the singers vocals, but you normally would sing along with the singer.
