A couple of girls go on holiday to a strange location and behave in a flirting way with locals is asking for trouble. Girls should go in a group and have at least two males to accompany them. I concur, no one DESERVES what happened.
But they did go out of their way to INVITE that kind of thing, so my compassion is limited, and saved more for people/women who suffer through something that no amount of sense or rational thought could have prevented.
1) They should have known more Spanish to go it alone.
2) They should have had more capacity to defend themselves.
3) They should have realized that the mores they considered acceptable back home might not go over so well there, and that inviting attention as they (particularly the brunette) did, might not go over so well.
4) They should NEVER have left each other alone at all -- either at the bar or later.
5) They should have been much more wary of strangers.
6) They should have had people aware of where they were at all times.
No, none of these make them DESERVE to suffer. But many others suffer equally or worse for being much less STUPID and FOOLISH, and I do not have a great deal of tears saved up for victims of their own stupidity, which, if this were a real story, would have clearly been the case.
And lest you think I'm being in any way anti-female, no, I would suggest the above would be true for men, as well, even though they are FAR LESS likely to be in any trouble such as these girls were (might get killed in a bar fight if they flirted with the wrong girl, though). You can bet your ass I'd be wary of being in a place like Thailand or even Hong Kong without a guide. I'd be wary of ANYplace not in the first world where English speaking wasn't common.

Word-up stupid spoiled American brats - you can't just go anywhere you want and pretend everything works like back home. When traveling abroad, learn the local customs and behave respectfully. Prancing around in a conservative society drunk and wearing a bikini is a formula for trouble. It happens all the time where I live (Thailand) at beach parties when girls get nearly naked and wasted on buckets of cheap booze then stumble off into the darkness. The girls in this movie were naive idiots and stupidly set themselves up for danger. In a perfect world you would have an escape, but in the real world you need to clue-up and cover your ass.
