This Will Sound Shallow But...

...I think they should have casted uglier people as the nerds.

I mean, the main guy and the skater looking nerd probably wouldn't have been bullied in real life, and based on looks alone probably would have found themselves in a more popular social circle growing up.

Now, before anyone jumps down my throat, I have low tolerance for bullies. I can't stand bullying. But I'd say statistically, those who are bullied generally have something about them that sets themselves apart from their peers, whether it be because of wardrobe, intellect, hobbies, activities, body type, etc. I just can't really see the "nerds" in this movie (aside from the girl) being all that different (not counting personality wise, given they were not bullies before they decided to do what they did).

It's like when they cast a hot girl to play an "ugly nerd" (like in She's All That or A Walk To Remember). It's not realistic at all.

Sometimes bullys pick on others because of the things they like or the way they dress. I was bullied terribly for wearing black and liking horror movies when I was a teen, but I've never had trouble with the guys. I've seen many 'Good Looking' kids bullied for dumb reasons.

Have you seen this prick?

Do not attempt to apprehend this prick as it is armed and dangerous.

reply

I think bullies are the dumbest creatures.

It's like they pick on anyone who is not measuring up to some stupid social standards...

God help their brains.

(aside from the girl)

I thought "the girl" was HOT!!

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

I think that's valid, but in high school definitions of whose attractive or not can be ridiculous and completely arbitrary. Often, we are talking about relatively immature people to say the least. In any event, did you at least think the bullying scenes were realistic? Could you picture Bradley, Bernard and the three mean girls being real high school students, minus the obvious age difference?

reply

I personally thought that brunette was A really cute girl. I didn't see anything wrong with at all honestly! But I agree with you about them kids not fitting the typical cliche' nerds you'd expect. I don't know..

Well, they're what they call TV/Movie ugly I guess. It happens all the time. I remember when the American version of "Ugly Betty" started and people were complaining that she really wasn't ugly and went on to compare her to others who had played the role in other countries and compared her to them and made the point that they were more 'real life' ugly and she was (to use the term again) 'TV/Movie' ugly. I guess it's all relative really. :)

As I mentioned in another thread, you can be good looking and still be bullied. I know from experience. I was always quiet, preferred to be alone rather than be social, and I didn't play or like any sports. That's what made me an outcast.

reply

Yep! That post is pretty shallow!

You said yourself in your thread that being bullied can be because of more than just looks.

Look at some of the bullied victims in the recent past. I won't list out people, but a lot of them seem like normal people - some even cute and handsome. The one girl who jumped off a water tower recently was really pretty.

And people blossom and grow as well. But if a pattern of bullying a person is already established, getting better looking won't really change that.

If Bully harasses nerd in middle school there's a pretty good chance Bully will continue to harass nerd in high school regardless of how good looking nerd gets.
