Emily stole from Audition (spoilers!)

I saw this movie on the SyFy Channel last night, thought it was decent and wouldn't mind picking up the DVD. I'm a big horror fan and have seen a lot of the Asian horror films in the 2000s boom of them.

When Emily paralyzes Bernard and sticks the needles into him while saying, "deeper...deeper...", that's a scene straight out of the 1999 Takashi Miikie film Audition. There's a scene near the end where Asami paralyzes main character Aoyama and pushes needles into his chest, neck and face. The sub-titles translate her little chant to "deeper." Emily even wears a smock and long gloves identical to Asami's.

I see it as an homage and not a ripoff, but the scene stuck out to me when I saw it.

Yeah, I see it as a rip off though because they made no reference to the original film. If they had mentioned that it was one of the kids fav films, then I'd get it, but they made no reference, therefore, I believe it to be thievery. Surprised they got away with that considering how popular Audition is anyways.

reply

Movies rip from each other all the time! Its NO big deal!

Snowy, you have a good point. It may be stretching here, but early on there's a scene where Emily is watching tv in her room and talking on the phone with one of the others and says, "It's disgusting and brutal...It's perfect." (or something like that), maybe she was watching Audition? Like I said, it's really a stretch.

I think Prince is right, too. Films borrow plot elements all the time and I'm not sure if they could really be sued over it or anything.

reply

Good point, I do remember that. A stretch, but a def possibility.

reply

I thought that too when she was on the phone while watching tv. Especially since a while afterward, Emily moved on to talk one of the girls into cutting Bradley's fingers off. While in Audition, it was his foot, there's still that element of amputation.

I wouldn't consider it ripping off or stealing, more as a respective nod toward Audition.

reply

It's not theft; it's an allusion. Movies make references like this all the time. Look at any Quentin Tarantino film. It's not like in a piece of writing where you need to cite the source explicitly; it's an homage.

They didn't totally reference "Audition" but at the Cafeteria they said "If everything we've learned from horror films is accurate, this should go as planned"(loose quotations there), but they were all influenced by other horror films. That kids Clown mask was from Killer Clowns, the Hitler costume was from Dead Snow and other movies, the movie Husk and Wolf Creek were also in this. They never came out and said that's what they were from, but other horror movie fans knew.

reply

I said the same exact thing when I saw this on SyFy.

reply

Yes. As the poster above me stated paying homage to another movie isn't necessarily "ripping off." The director or writer probably appreciates the film Audition and was paying tribute.

reply

Considering details like the outfit and the " deeper" line, I think it's clear that the reference is very intentional. How would they directly recognize that it's a reference? The chained up kids saying "hey that's like the scene from that movie"? Lol nah it was definitely an homage to the film

There are too many mediocre things in life to deal with. Love shouldn't be one of them.

I loved that little film reference, made me feel like a real cinephile when I recognized it.

sad to be alone in the world, isn't it?

reply

Yes I noticed that too!! So cool :)

I took it as Emily's version of Audition. I just wish she'd have said Kiri kiri kiri or whatever that girl in Audition said. I was really disappointed that she didn't do the piano wire/foot thing, but it was obvious that there was no real budget for special effects in this flick.

If you're a big Asian horror fan, how could you consider buying this dreck? It was stupid. It's one of the "8 films to die for" which all seem to suck pretty hard. (Except Borderland and The Hamiltons.) You would put this up there with Oldboy, A Tale of Two Sister, Spider Forest, etc? That's just...bizarre to me.

reply

It wasn't "kiri" (Deeka?) but regardless it means "deeper" in English. She said "deeper" three times in The Final.

reply

I saw it a long time ago; I thought what she was saying was something like "kitty." I don't remember if I ever knew that what she said was the equivalent of "deeper." I didn't really care all that much by that point in Audition, I thought it was slow and relatively boring, up until "the" part.
