WHY NOT JUST CUT A BIGGER HOLE TO GET TO THE OIL INSIDE?

THAT'S WHAT THE JAPANESE DO.

Good question to ask a whaler next time you time-travel. I actually wondered the same thing

I don't think the oil is just sloshing around inside the whale, like it is a big keg.

I think they cut the whale up, and cook the flesh, and that is where the oil comes from, it's a process.

Actually, the oil is held within a cavity in the whale's head and was removed with buckets. There is also sperm oil in the blubber of a whale and this was boiled out in huge vats of boiling water but the sperm oil in the head was considered the "gold" of sperm oil. Why is there a chamber filled with oil in a whales head? The theory is it is used as a type of sonar by the whale to sense the motion of its prey.

You have an admirable knowledge of whale oil.

I liked the movie, but the parts of killing the whales made me sad. They are such majestic creatures.

The 'juice' he was getting out wasn't oil. It's something found in the sperm whale's head that was used like a grease. The oil does have to be cooked out.

And yes... just make the stupid hole bigger!!

reply

Really? I always thought the Japanese were little fellas anyway.

Spermaceti (from Latin sperma meaning "semen", and ceti meaning "whale"[1]) is a waxy substance found in the head cavities of the sperm whale (and, in smaller quantities, in the oils of other whales). Spermaceti is created in the spermaceti organ inside the whale's head.
