Watch Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World instead

I was hoping this film could be similar (in terms of quality and plot and dialogue) to Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Its not, even the first Pirates film with Depp is better than this.

Completely different films. They just both happen to have boats.

Agreed with the first poster. They are not at all comparable movies. This is a survival drama, more like 127 hours. The difference is where 127 succeeds in displaying how grueling the survival challenge was, ITHOTS fails. It's as if Howard took some parts of the book and instead of emoting the text he instead took a few interesting plot points and tried to get to them as fast as possible, not taking time to stew in the hopelessness of the crew's predicament.

The movie needed to be 1) longer, more focused on the after wreck portion, 2) less concerned about Melville and Moby Dick (people knew this is what inspired Melville), 3) less hollywoodized- I.e. The Essex exploding, the cheesy Spanish harbinger, making Pollock into a bumbling idiot and Chase the obvious hero, and the whale following them... Etc.

This is a great movie. I don't see what all the fuss is about.

Heart of the Sea a great movie?
You also believe that American Sniper is "great" by giving it a completely ridiculous over-the-top rating of 9 (nine!).
In all honesty, I do not think your opinion is of much value, since you do not seem to understand the craft behind what most people on imdB see: Entertainment.

I don't think i can take someone seriously who gives every other movie a 5 or below. And while being someone who seem pretentious. Your not even pretentious enough to give 2001 a 10. For shame.

5 or below?
That's not even true. Most of my ratings are 6-7.
You can't even read?
You're more *beep* than I thought at first...

Surely if 5/10 is average, at least half of all movies will be 5 or below?

It seems like if someone enjoys a movie now, they give it 7-9 which is far above average, or 1 if they hated it (which should be reserved for movies that are incoherent).

I personally gave ITHOTS a six. Enjoyed it, but felt it had some glaring faults such as not building the rest of the crew (so we feel more when they are lost or suffering), focusing too much on Chase (especially since he wasn't even the narrator), the constant interruption with Melville (which I felt should have bookeneded the movie instead) and the pretty but obvious greenscreen/CGI and colour grading.

Far from a bad film, though, but not up in the 7's or higher, IMO.

I don't know how you expected the plot and dialogue to be similar when they are totally different movies....that doesn't make sense. Did you know what the plot for a moby dick movie would be like?

reply

I think he meant plot and dialogue quality - and I agree with that.
Master and Commander teleported you into its timeline, you were basically a crew member and everything was very authentic and believable without trying too hard/being pathetic.

I and not say the same about Heart of the Sea.
There are so many scenes that make me cringe, basically all scenes with Hemsworth, when he gives us his strong manly "this is all I know!" kind of attitude, when they leave port and he, after receiving orders from the captain, totally over-motivated starts yelling out orders with this cringy, cringy attitude that tries so, SO hard to make us believe that he is this free-spirited strong individual that lives for his passion and...oh God I need to puke, wait........ and who is such a stinking white-knight type of person.

Or the scene where he drops the boy overboard, holding him at his ankle, blubbering about King Neptune. It was night, there was fog. If he would have slipped, the boy would be gone - no chance to save him, none - hence it was highly unrealistic, only for dramatic effect.

When movies have to show BS to get some drama - they suck.
Simple, really.

I was hoping for that as well, and was disappointed. Yes, they are totally different movies, but Master and Commander did a great job at fully immersing you in the reality of the navy at that time, life on a ship, and the crew dynamics. In the book, and Moby Dick, there is so much description of the whaling industry and Nantucket that I was hoping the movie would be a little more believable. Even the sets lacked a lot, I thought. As a period piece i thought it fell flat. I sailed on tall ships for several years, so I'm a little biased, but I was hoping for more development across the board: set, plot, characters... I'm not a huge fan of Hemsworth, but I think he did about as well as he could with the script.

It wasn't a terrible movie, but I am glad I got it from the library and didn't buy it.

Peter Weir did a masterful job on that movie! I think Ron Howard did a great job with docudramas "Apollo 13" and "Rush." But, his other movies can be too slick and emotionless.

Master and Commander definitely had more interesting characters...
