Fair to the book?

For people who have seen this and read the book prior, how does the movie compare? Is there a lot of artistic liberties taken or is the movie fairly consistent with the book?

Thanks :)

I saw the movie tonight and am only up to chapter 4 in the book, but based on what I've read so far I think they did a very good job. The main difference is they have left out a good deal of background material and character development, but to incorporate all of that would have made for a very long movie. I'm satisfied that they captured the spirit of the book; after I finish reading I want to go back and see it again -- assuming its still in the theaters!

I agree with John on that it was decent but it did leave out a lot of background stuff, and some of my favorite scenes. The one of the Golden fish(can't remember atm what kind of fish it was I think a carp?) and the Christmas Play. Now these were not hugely needed for the plot, but I think it could have been better if they at least had the one when Florence and Antonio go to see the Great Golden Carp. (yes, I think that is what it was. Excuse my lack of memory been about a year since I read it and it is 330am here.)
