His killing himself was somehow related to the four leaf clover, which is also established as being part of the mystery surrounding the cross-word puzzles and David's death.
This has something to do with the people pulling the strings and who are possibly responsible for David's death.
When Will sees Katherine at the party you then know that she is (or probably her husband was) linked to the organisation.
This is part of the mystery.

Tom Rhumor is one of the 7 boyhood friends, who grew up to be the 7 man cabal who are running these off-book operations all over the world.
He's been a player in their team for decades apparently.
I think it was James Wheeler (?), one of the 7 men, who went into Tom's east side townhouse to steal/remove the boyhood photo of the 7 young pals taken in their swim trunks apparently holidaying together at one of their parents' rich-person private islands like Fisher's Island, or such.
Wheeler likely took the photo because he didn't want Katherine to see it and link the 7 of the men together by seeing they'd been friends since boyhood.
But clearly Rhumor did not want to go along with it anymore, and made a mismanaged move with a company that got their attention. That is the company he left to Katherine.
Ergo, he got the "green four leaf clover" warning to off himself, after he proved to be unreliable.
My guess if they all were aware that if they got that four leaf clover, it was comply or your whole beloved family gets it too.
