Hollywood doesn't know how to make movies for black audiences

It's really unfortunate. The only really great movies aimed at black audiences tend to come from generally young directors who are making some sort of statement (or Lee Daniels). The hollywood stuff tends to be drivel.

I disagree. They're making the same drivel that Hollywood is making. The difference is
that they're making a different kind of drivel. Movies like Selma, The Butler and 12 Years A Slave are still more of the same. There are members of the black audience that are even tired to movies with statements and politics...I know I am.

I kinda wish there'd be movies that had nothing to do with race, where minorities could be a star. Like why not make a werewolf movie where the leads happen to be black people, you know? It just doesn't happen that often.

reply

I agree. Don't make it about the race or ethnicity. Make it about the people, who just happen to be a certain race or ethnicity.

From what I can tell of the trailer; this movie has nothing to do with race.. It is another one of those suspense thrillers. Only this one has Black leads. Movies like "Do the Right Thing and "Crash" are about race.

reply

That's THIS movie. There was nothing racial about it. It could have easily had white leads.

reply

Even if it did happen someone somewhere would bring race into it and ruin it all. There is no escaping "race" in todays society. If you make superman white its bad. If you make superman black its bad. etc. Overall I don't think Hollywood really gives a crap other than what is going to put butts in seats and sell. Money is what drives Hollywood.

reply

That's a Will Smith movie, ala Focus.

Other than that, there is none.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

This movie is not about race.. The problem with some peoples mindset is that if they see more than three Black people in a movie, then they are the ones that make it about race. This movie was more fatal attraction stuff like Swimfan or Obsessed...or basically any movie where a young girl falls for an older guy then goes all crazy..

The really strong films for black audiences are there, but hollywood is really playing it safe (in my opinion, they're playing it safe more with black audiences than they do with bigger budget films).

I think the problem now is studios like Screen Gems, who did No Good Deed & The Perfect Guy (ironically coming out around the same time in the year as this one), its becoming a game of testing the waters to seeing of people will turn out for films like this and not putting much effort into them in the process.

In a time where last year we had Straight Outta Compton, Dope & Creed, which were really good films in my opinion, I feel like hollywood is moving towards better films, but the process is very slow and drown out.

This isn't aimed at black audiences, it has a black cast. Pretty sure it's aimed at all movie goers

I agree MandarineGrace. I'm a white guy that saw Hand that Rocks the Cradle a long time ago and when I saw the trailer for this, I had put it on my watchlist. Although judging by IMDb's "People who liked this also liked..." on the movie's IMDb page, it looks like it has ended up more of a Muhammad Ali fans following. To my surprise, of the 12 "People who liked this also liked..." movie recommendations, Hand the Rocks the Cradle isn't among them.

This movie reminds me too much of 'Obsessed' with Idris Elba and Beyonce.

I'd love to see a movie with a black cast that had nothing to do with cheating spouses, rap/hip-hop culture, or poverty.

Like, a film like 'Fight Club' or 'Memento,' but with a black cast. That'd be interesting.

reply

Exactly what I've been saying for a long time now. I'm tired of relationship movies with all the same black actors

reply

Then go watch Tyler Perry

reply

His movies are no better, either.

It is NOT aimed at a black audience. It is aimed at an audience that likes thrillers. I like thrillers. It made no difference that the cast was predominantly black. Do you really think a black couple reacts differently than a white couple in this situation? Come on. People need to get their heads out of the sand. Does everything have to be about race? Why can't we just enjoy a good movie?

reply

It is NOT aimed at a black audience.

You're right. It's not...it's also aimed at the Lifetime audience, too. If this was aimed at audiences that like thrillers, where were the ads on channels that weren't called Lifetime, BET or Bravo?

Does everything have to be about race?

Because there are a lot of people making it about race.
With all this push for "diversity" in Hollywood, there are many people who are making a huge deal and are going out of their way to point that out race and gender as well.

Personally, all this talk in Hollywood about diversity is such a joke.

Why can't we just enjoy a good movie?

One could if this were even remotely any good.

It's not even really a matter of quality, but diversity-- in genres.

They don't make, for instance, cursed or ghost films with black casts ala The Conjuring or The Ring unless it's a comedy/parody or basic "man saves his family" action films like Taken. They don't make time travel films (imagine a black version of Back to the Future where a kid from 2017 goes back to 1997 and hangs out with their parents). Or a space adventures like Star Wars.

But really, horror/thriller is where they should be focusing because you don't need big stars or a big budget if you have a good horror concept. And there hasn't been a solid black horror icon since Candyman. Unfortunately they are too willing to settle for stealing Lifetime stories like When the Bough Breaks instead of stealing ideas from good thriller films like Just Another Love Story, Audition or Vertigo.

Revenge is the most important meal of the day.
