This has been bothering me - couldn't the cops with the help of the tech guy have just located the mobile phone that belonged to one of the victims and that the killers used to call the police station? Seems like an obvious thing to do...

that's exactly what they did!! but - AS HE SAID - the reception and coverage was so patchy out there that you could walk ten steps sideways and not have coverage anymore. so all he could do was give the general area.
which is you know, where the map came from....the big one he carried around with him for the last half hour of the movie...
good lord i am shocked at all the questions and confusion on this board - it was a straightforward film, and people just didn't seem to understand any of it...
Lol.. I understand it, I'm watching now, people don't pay attention, it really is straight forward, I like it.
