Despicable!

There are no words to describe this lame and dreadful attempt of a movie! This isn't art, in any way!!! Just sick, disturbing and horrible. Can't believe someone actually put it out there. Pure disaster!!!

I know, man! I felt the same way about 'Moulin Rouge' !

reply

I thought it was pretty decent actually.

Hey Corpus_Vile, long time no speak. How're you doing, bro?

Knowing we share the same penchant for horror and transgressive cinema, can you shed some light on this film with regards to the comparisons made to A Serbian Film, which I've seen in all its uncut glory. The Life and Death of a Porno Gang peeks my interest but I'd like to know the opinion of someone I trust on such matters as importing DVDs ain't as cheap as it used to be so I'd like to know whether you reckon it's worth pre-ordering?

Hey CB, sorry mate, just caught this now and good to see ya again.

I think it's worth a buy. I personally preferred A Serbian Film, as it was schlockier but this one is actually arguably better in a critical sense and possibly a lot more valid as an allegory than ASF was. It's also more extreme in the sense that it's chock full of XXX, but perhaps not as graphic in the grue sense.
Overall, it's another downbeat and absorbing film and worth adding to the collection, imho.
Sorry again for the late reply, I've been merely posting on IMDB without checking my actual email notification, my bad.
Btw, did you ever get to see No Morira Sola? I've heard a rumour that Synapse are thinking of releasing it (which would be sweet) but dunno how true this is.

Oh and I was lucky enough to meet William Friedkin last Saturday at the screening of his new film Killer Joe, which I found good demented (if slightly absurd) fun. Despite his crazy reputation, he came across as a total gent, and I'm delighted I met him as I'm quite the fan of his.

Hey CV, no worries about the late reply.

I'm going to pre-order this as it looks like just the sort of thing I haven't seen enough of lately. Same goes for No Morira Sola. I never bought the Japanese DVD but things look promising as it seems Synapse will be putting this one out along with two other films by the director.

Going back to A Serbian Film I received news the other day from the filmmakers at ContraFilm that they now have their own DVD completed. They sent me an eBay link to buy the film, which I checked out. The DVD artwork is cool; they've put Milos standing in the centre of the disc with the hole in the disc covering his crotch. The back sleeve artwork states Runtime: As it should be. Apparently, Some do-gooder twat reported it within 20 minutes of the DVD being available on eBay and it was taken down, so now they're looking for other avenues to sell their DVD. Have you seen the Invincible Pictures package of the uncut release? Talk about done on the cheap. They put the disc in a slimline CD jewel case and stuck it to a piece of cardboard and then had the nerve to badge it as a limited edition! I'm going to hold out and wait to see if ContraFilm can get their DVD out there somehow.

I saw a trailer for Killer Joe recently and thought 'what the hell'. I had no idea it was Friedkin's latest and I've always enjoyed Matthew McConaughey's work and personally, I think he would've been far more entertaining and effective as Lou Ford in Winterbottom's The Killer Inside Me, though that's not to say Casey Affleck wasn't good (as it goes his performance was a revelation). Anyway, I'll definitely get The Life and Death of a Porno Gang and No Morira Sola when they come to DVD. It's been a while since I enjoyed some movie depravity! I finally got around to watching Mother Of Tears recently (been sitting on the shelf for the last couple of years) and was pleasantly surprised to find I was nowhere near as disappointed as I'd geared myself up to be for this one.

By the way, did you get to ask Friedkin any questions?

Oh man, that's awesome news regarding the Synapse release, glad it turned out to be true. I think it's great how such a small film can get a deal via what I suspect is word of mouth, and I wonder if Don May lurks the IMDB horror board as No Morira Sola was very well received by the board in general, and was plugged by various regs, so I'm delighted to see Bogliano get some well deserved dues.
I also have his 36 Pesos, which I haven't watched yet but have heard good things about. I've heard his Room For Tourists is decent also. I've also seen his Cold sweat which I wasn't mad about, but he's definitely a director I'm keeping an eye on, and thanks for the link.

There was a completely unrated version of ASF on Amazon on both dvd & blu ray, but it quickly went outa stock. Apparently you could watch it in a version where whenever a scene which was originqally censored came up, a yellow "X" appeared, to let you know. I have no idea if it's still in print but it was definitely available, as I remember a horror board reg buying it and linking the Amazon page. The unrated version is 104 mins afaik.

I reckon you'll definitely appreciate Porno Gang on some level anyway, and overall, I found it pretty decent, and would be interested in reading your thoughts on it, and No Morira Sola if you ever get the chance.

As for Friedkin, I'm a big fan of his underrated crime flick To Live & Die in LA, so I asked him some questions based on the comments posted in regards to this clip- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjDSymGHM3M
Apparently, Frieskin was investigated briefly by the real Secret Service, due to the fake money made during shooting. Friedkin confirmed this and seemed very pleased someone had mentioned the film. He also expressed his pleasure that I had given him Cruising to sign, and said how much he liked the film. He then thanked me for my question on To Live & Die in LA, which was kinda awesome.

I agree with you on McGonaughy being a good call for The Killer Inside Me, and I always thought he'd make a good psycho actually, and in Killer Joe, he's clearly enjoying himself immensly. Worth a look overall, definitely.

Btw, another Friedkin flick well worth checking out is his Wages of Fear remake, Sorcerer (1977), which is actually one of his best and most overlooked film. It was apparently a flop, but excellent films, and recommended if you haven't seen it yet.

I gotta say, I found Mother Of Tears great fun. Any film that has strangulation via intestines, chick on chick, Asia in the shower and an honest to God Family Guy style evil monkey gets a resounding yay from me. I found it completely craptastic.

Hey Corpus_Vile

I meant to get back to you sooner on this thread.

It's being advertised everywhere now. I've got mine on pre-order.

According to Michael's Movie Mayhem the release date is 14 August.

I'm intrigued by the tagline: "More powerful than A SERBIAN FILM! This violent, gory and thought-provoking film is one of the most controversial releases of this or any other year! THE LIFE AND DEATH OF A PORNO GANG will shock you like no other Synapse Films release." Could there be anything that pushes beyond the boundaries of A Serbian Film? Don't spoil it for me!

I'll let you know what I think when I've seen it and will also be looking out for No Morira Sola as that's one you mentioned / recommended for me over a year ago (I think).

I love To Live & Die in LA. Extremely underrated Friedkin flick that while dated still holds up very well. It puts me in mind of Michael Mann's Miami Vice (the later feature length) in terms of atmosphere. I've also added Wages of Fear aka Sorcerer as that's one that skipped my radar. I love Clouzot's original but would love to see an updated version... OK, the '70s hardly seems updated but considering Clouzot's film was a '50s film, I'm very keen to see what Friedkin did with that one.

Oh yeah, and Mother Of Tears was great fun. I don't understand why Argento's getting such bad press these days. Do people really expect another Suspiria or Deep Red?

Thanks for the recs, fella.

Thanks for the links mate. Lol, I shamefully still haven't seen The Wages of Fear yet, although I intend to rectify that. Sorcerer's great though, and one of Friedkin's best imo. It's currently in limbo in regards to a blu ray release but Friedkin did indicate it was going ahead at the Killer Joe screening, so fingers crossed.
And yeah, Porno Gang goes further than ASF imho, and I'd be very interested in your thoughts on it.

And no worries mate, always a pleasure.
