Johnny Cage's X-Ray attack is driving me crazy

I've got Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition on pc and Johnny Cage's X-Ray attack is driving me crazy.

I keep messing it up because I'm never 100% sure WHEN to execute it.

Am I supposed to perform the X-Ray attack when my opponent attacks me?

I should have known those alien maggots booby trapped this sub

Yes, when you see that your enemy is about to attack you perform your x-ray move, and Johnny will punch them in the groin and break their back
