How could anyone not enjoy this?

Great film, easily the best sci-fi to come out in a long time. If you like sci-fi, ignore the haters and watch this film. Why anyone would rate it less than 7 is a mystery to me. That is all.

reply

Some people aren't that into action movies. I would have liked more science fiction, less action. Still, it was decent. 6/10

LOL! It's a little late for the shills to come in now, SONY. But I reckon there can't be too many brain cells working their way through your company when you green-light such an inevitable failure as a Total Remake starring Colin Farrell...

reply

@RoboTheCock, your comment doesn't even make sense. What the hell are you talking about?

reply

I was thinking the same thing, haha.

I would give this a 6.5/10. It was mostly a long drawn out chase scene, but I enjoyed the back drop of the ghetto-- very romantically sleazy, and the complexity of the upscale british hoighty toighty side of the earth. I thought the acting was more than satisfactory, and the plot made basic sense. Something that I always enjoy about new sci fi films is the creative futuristic things in it-like hover cars, hand phones, robot slaves, transportation cubes, and mind altering machines.

I really liked the whole tunnel through the core idea and liked the visuals of it, and could understand the message of the film-- that the powerful dont care about destroying the world because they will have their own utopias and can always take advantage of the poor and lie to them until they have a complete robot slave race. This will be our future, as the wealthiest find less reasons to have us poor folk around. The earth and it's people are more or less doomed as a whole.

reply

Why are you replying to me?

The home video version just came out so some people are just seeing it now. Although I disagree that it is the best SF film in a long time I am glad the OP enjoyed it.

reply

How old are you, 11? Some people liked this film. Some people that liked the original still liked this film. Just because you and your Aunty Mom hated it, it doesn't mean that there's only one way to consider it.

Please do not make negative comments about a film YOU NEVER SAW. It makes you look stupid.

reply

Many hated it. I hated it. It's boring. It has no heart, no humor, no fun. And yes, it is constantly being compared to the original, because they gave it the same name as the original. They didn't have to do that. Like the original, the credits say "Inspired by the short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, by Philip K. Dick". This new one should add "Title Ripped From The 1990 film Total Recall". They should have named it something else.

reply

Actually, in the credits for this film it says:

"BASED ON THE MOTION PICTURE "TOTAL RECALL"
SCREENPLAY BY RONALD SHUSETT & DAN O'BANNON AND GARY GOLDMAN
SCREEN STORY BY RONALD SHUSSETT & DAN O'BANNON AND JON POVILL"

The title should be the same.

I got punched in the face. What's your excuse?

reply

Oh, it says that, ok. Well, the title should still be different, I think.

Like I said, the plot is too different, no Mars, no mutants, no cause for identity change now without psychics, and most importantly, no one actually says the phrase "total recall" in this one.

The reason to make it the same name has to be just to ride the coattails of a popular movie. What a ripoff!

reply

Exactly. I feel the same. In my opinion anyone who watched the original first would hate this movie. It was so boring. Except some nice special effects, everything else in this movie was garbage comparing to the original. Someone once said: you have to know how to mess things up - they certainly did know how to mess things up here. What a shame.

reply

I had seen the original three times before I saw the remake. I thought the remake was better.

reply

Hard to believe. Perhaps you are a very young person, and have no taste for such a relatively old sci-fi. But in the original everything clicked. In the remake nothing did. So why did you like it?

reply

Define "very young". I am 26. I still love the original, btw.

So why did you like it?

Because it is good.

"Because it is good."

I don't see anything good, except some special effects ideas.

And I do.

What the *beep* is robothecock talking about? Could he make less sense or be more abstract? I think not! Shut the *beep* up and go be obnoxious somewhere else! You have class written all over you.

reply

I'm not into mindless(Steven Segal)type action movies but this had quality actors and almost enough SciFi haha I liked it pretty well.

reply

Really? I felt that there was hardly any action. There was a lot of running away, sneaking away and driving away, though.

Sorry, for me it was just another formula movie.
Run 'em + chase 'em + shoot 'em up + CGI + Hot Bitches - no story /= a good movie.

/= stands for "does not equal".

/= stands for "does not equal".

I believe the proper symbol for "does not equal" is !=

C programming. Before that, the BASIC programming language used <> as "does not equal".

reply

I've been programming in C and C++ for a long time and have never seen /= . The C language uses !=. I forgot about <>.. It has been a long time since I've done BASIC.

reply

No, you're right. I meant that C/C++ is where you probably got the != operator. But != isn't used in printed text, or anywhere besides C-based languages that I've ever seen. It's commonly ≠ , which I'm sure is what path_finder meant by /=.

By the way, /= is a C operator, but not for "does not equal". It is the division assignment operator. That is, a /= b divides a by b and assigns the quotient to a (equivalent to a = a / b). Much like a += b adds a and b and assigns the sum to a.

Ah, I see. I am familiar with ≠ and probably just didn't think of /= as the same.

That's right.. Forgot about /=. I tend to use += a lot but /= much less frequently.

reply

I know. Using += is common, with the occasional -=, but *= and especially /= are rarely used. I don't think I knew about them until recent years.

reply

Why would you watch a Run 'em + chase 'em + shoot 'em up + CGI + Hot Bitches movie, if you don't like that kind? -.-

reply

You forgot the "no story" part of his formula.

reply

I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure I'd give it a 10/10. In some ways, I liked the original Total Recall (from 1990) better. This remake had more action & fighting and seemed to have slightly less discussion about whether Quaid's experience was a dream or not.

I actually enjoyed the movie. As a sci-fi action thriller. I bet if they decided not to call it Total Recall, they would have had much better success.

I felt like the movie was a mix of:

Old Total Recall + Bourne Identity + Terminator + Fifth Element

I am very partial to the original, because I love Arnold & 90's action movies, so I actually hated on this movie before watching it, but this one was very entertaining and I kind of feel bad for being a bust as a result of being a remake. Since it was so enjoyable.

P.S The one attempt at Colin Farrell trying to throw in a one line failed.

reply

In a different year - probably. But the year 2012 was LOADED with high budget action movies and most of them were parts of extremely popular franchises. 'Skyfall', 'The Bourne Legacy', 'The Expendables 2', 'The Avengers', 'The Dark Knight Rises'...

One-liners are so shallow and unrealistic anyway, so I don't get your complaint there. What is there to love about Arnold? He can't act, and in real life I'm not sure he's a likeable person. On top of that he doesn't speak the English very well. The original had it's charm but it is very dated and I can't stand to see those stick-and-stone special effects anymore.

reply

It felt a bit soulless...other than that it was fine.

reply

To be honest I found it a bit repetitive and quite boring, it wasn't fast paced enough for me. I would have liked to see more action and Kate Beckinsale's character got on my nerves a little, but hey if everyone liked the same things the world would be a very boring place.

In Terms Of Action Scenes Total Recall(2012) IS GREAT

reply

Because compared to the awesome roller-coaster ride that was the Paul Verhoeven version, the new one was just a more blingy wannabe, essentially a rehashed Underworld film.
Plus Colin Ferrell is no Arnold, and quite frankly, the original simply did not need a remake.
The kids out there who prefer this to the original probably think Jersey Shore is cooler to watch on MTV than music videos; they probably also prefer 12-hour marathons of Pawn Stars and Cajun Pawn Stars on The History Channel instead of any historical documentaries.

reply

Or they prefer real actors.

reply

Or they prefer boredom.

reply

I like kate beckinsale but shes not bruce lee, i mean he runs from her the whole movie and every time they fight he barely escapes with his life. Hard to imagine Arnold running from sharon stone all movie.

reply

I just watched Total Recall (2012) and was quite entertained. I was never so devoted to or awe-struck by the first version that I'd think it was sacrilege to re-make it, and I think Len Wisemen and his crew did a good job. I thought it was different enough from the original, and had enough good qualities of its own to make it worth watching. Production values were excellent, acting was everything one would want in a film like this, and I wasn't bored for a second. I would definitely recommend it.
