The reason they jumped is

The reason they jumped is interpretive. So the audience is free to interprete the reason however they like.

My interpretation is that their reckless endangerment of their own lives finally caught up with them

reply

Nope. So that they can focus more on the actual protagonists and pay Sam and Dwayne less..

HAHAHA!

I agree 100%. They killed them off at the perfect time with a great joke. I was just starting to want a Samuel L. Jackson/Dwayne Johnson buddy movie right at the time they died and then I remembered, this is a Will Ferrell/Mark Walhberg movie.

Exactly.

Consider too, the possibility that "the bad guys" set them up.
Why race to the rooftop and then zip line down? They knew
the Super Hero cops would simply take the bait and... Jump!

Your signature doesn't make sense. You need to replace the 'and' with 'at'. Sorry that was bothering me ;)

reply

Oh sorry about that. My bad! Thanks for the heads up

No its not. Not even a little tiny bit. Its simple and cut and dry. Anyone that is even remotely confused about what happened and what the joke was implying is just way too simple.

There is no interpreting it at all. Its just simply mocking the over the top action stunts action stars always walk away from. By exaggerating this they felt it was perfectly reasonable they could make a 20 story jump and be ok... Thats the joke. Nothing to analyze or think about. Its a one note joke. And a good one.

No but seriously, lets keep dissecting absurd comedy bits. It cranks the comedy factor up to 11 (You see, 11 is ridiculous, because number systems are all relative and representative {One could easily make 10 more intense thereby accomplishing the same goal <Because we operate on a denary number system, it is therefore the most logical option to have 10 represent the highest volume/most intensity>}).

INCEPTION PARENTHESIS!!!

just finished watching this dumb a s s film and i watched that sequence twice, i thought their ego got in the way, they didnt want to go back to the preccinct as loosers , as the guys who couldnt catch the thieves, their reputation is all they got, so they decided to go out in style , record of catching bad guys in flamboyant fashion intact!

then again it also make sense they thought they could make the jump without needing the wire after all its clear they weren't the smartest tool in the shed!

reply

I thought they jumped because they figured it was better than starring in this movie.

reply

There is one word that describes why they jumped - Arrogance. They were so full of themselves they thought they were tough enough to jump off a building, land in the bushes and keep chasing the bad guys. Simple.

" I'm freakin pumped! I've been drinking green tea all goddamn day!"

" I'm freakin pumped! I've been drinking green tea all goddamn day!"

A Hot Rod quote!!!!!!! Oh I love that movie.

reply

If I could "like" this.. I totally would.

Rod: Ancestors protect me.
Kevin: May they protect you!

I was just wondering how the characters of Samuel L Jackson and Dwayne Johnson jumped into what they thought were bushed, and ended up jumping to their deaths on the pavement instead which was rather hilarious.

It blows me away how so many people think this! Its just so stupid. And you watched the scene twice and thats what you got??

Arrogance. They were so full of themselves they thought they were tough enough to jump off a building, land in the bushes and keep chasing the bad guys. Simple
So simple! I'm shaking my head people didn't see that and think these guys killed themselves. Wow. We are not talking about some twist here that needs to be analyzed. We are talking about something so very simple its silly....

reply

That's probably why it confused people, because the joke was just that simple.

But 11 is one more than 10!

For TylerDurden,

Denary? Really?!! I understand your deeply rooted need to impress others with your embedded braces, parentheses and whatnot; however, no one, but no one, uses your chosen modifier to describe the North American system of numerals. Try base-10, base ten, or even decimal unless the aim is to remain a friendless asscap with free time galore given your tabula rasa of a social calendar. Bon chance.

Hahaha... It was great.

"Aim for the bushes." Hahaha...

I was sad we didn't have a whole movie about The Rock and Samuel L Jackson as cops...

reply

So, I'm sitting in the theater with my wife, laughing my ass off at these two. I had heard mixed reviews going into this movie, but was thoroughly enjoying Sam and Duane's on-screen time.

Just as they bust onto the roof and My Hero starts playing (it's one of my favorite songs, so that added to the moment), I lean over to my wife and whisper, "I don't care if everything else in this movie ends up being a turd. I could watch these two all damn day! Their scenes alone will make the rest of this movie awesome!"

They run. They leap. I get confused. I start desperately searching for the bushes. I look on in horror as they plummet to their death. I frantically start hoping for a cut to a hospital scene. The movie cuts to a cemetery scene. I let out a defeated whimper. My wife laughs at me.

By far the best comment I've read in a while, thanks for the laugh justcallmezach. When they jumped to their death I found myself laughing ouyt of shock and confusion - it was a well played and unexpected joke.

reply

"I start desperately searching for the bushes"

LMAO! Your comment is HILARIOUS! I love how descriptive you are. My husband and I had a similar reaction. I rewound (is it still called that??) it and watched that part again not understanding what just happened.

I agree with you; they were mocking the outrageous stunts of other movies.

reply

^^^
That's it exactly. People here are overthinking things. Everything about Highsmith and Danson was an over the top mockery of all the ridiculous, unrealistic, action movie behavior we've seen so many times -- you know, loose cannon detectives who make their own rules; guns that never run out of ammo; "Billy Badass" attitudes and the attendant contempt for non-macho fellow officers; hero characters with "cool" classic cars; car chases that wreck whole city neighborhoods; and invulnerable characters who walk away from things that would leave any real person as dead as disco, and who get away with shenanigans that would get real cops sued, suspended, fired, and/or arrested.

The comedy comes from ratcheting all this stuff up to levels so absurd that suspension of disbelief is simply impossible, and then having the actors play it straight, not clown around and try to be funny. There's no significance to the characters' actions beyond that.

reply

^^^ This.

It's cause they thought they were unstoppable cause they were doing so much crazy stuff. Then they thought "We got this"

"The saddest thing in life is wasted talent." ~ A Bronx Tale (1993)

reply

In the sense of the movie world created and the character's motivation to do it, then YES, they were so cocky that they thought they could walk away from ANYTHING.

But in the sense of what was supposed to be made fun of. Then it's even simpler. As an audience we're used to big action movies where the BIG stars, think Arnie or Sly or Bruce Willis, walk away from everything imaginable. From explosions 5 feet away from them to jumping on top of harriers.
Here, we have Sam L. and The Rock being those exact stereotypes, but instead of living through it all...actually die in the beginning of the movie. It's hilarious because their decision was so stupid and actually died that it actually took us by surprise because we're so used to the big guys walking away without a scratch.

So no hidden message, nothing to interpret, it's really JUST THAT SIMPLE.

reply

lol i didn't know they would have such a short part in the film
i was actually looking for the bushes

reply

I was too! I died laughing during this part.

LMAO!!

Now u know why they call me Chicago Wind, fool.

reply

Wow, all of you are thinking too much into this scene, especially the guy who said they commited suicide because they couldn't catch the bad guys. Seriously???

They jumped thinking they would land on some bushes and walk out of it fine. One of them even said "Aim for the bushes". Instead, they land in the concrete and die. As a matter of fact, there were no bushes anywhere to be seen. Theire characters were built up to be these super cops and ended up being a couple of dumb a***. That is it. Thats the joke. Nothing else to it.

reply

That was the funniest scene! I was looking for those bushes too! Lol!

reply

Nah, its more complex than that. Deep down, Sam and the Rock were deeply depressed. They both wanted to kill themselves to escape a life that gave them no fulfillment. All of their reckless behaviors were attempts at suicide. They had been waiting for a moment like this. A moment that would ensure their escape from this cruel world.

Or, it was just funny because ya never see people jump off a tall building thinking they'll actually survive.

Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true!

reply

I thought it was to avoid spending any more screen time in such a truly dreadful movie. I took a little longer to give up on it. One of the few movies I gave up watching.

reply

All the crazy sh#t they did trying to catch those guys that had a few bags of weed and still managed to survive in the beginning lead the audience to believe that they would probably survive anything. When Samuel L Jackson said aim for the bushes it was a joke on the viewer. Most people were probably looking around for bushes as they fell, but for some reason as soon as they jumped, I thought they would hit the pavement because they were in a major metropolitan city and their aren't really any large areas for plants unless you are near a park and even if their are a few near the building they were on, it wouldn't be enough to cushion the fall of two dudes from that high up.

Back to the original question, because they thought it would go like it usually goes: causing lots of collateral damage to arrest criminals for a minor crime, getting great press from fake tabloid news outlets, sex with many hot women, and partying at the club, although not necessarily in that particular order.

reply

[deleted]

I loved The Rock I was so focused on looking at him throughout the movie....lol. Anyways, I thought that part was funny I was also looking for the bushes.

reply

I think they were aiming for George W. and Laura Bush.

reply

Honestly, this movie is basically about the government and the current economic crysis. Therefore, I interpreted pretty much every scene as having to do with that.

Samuel L. and The Rock were basically the average American before the crash. Thinking they're invincible. Doing whatever they like. Blowing *beep* up and wasting tax payer money like it ain't no thang. Then they jump off a ****ing roof and eat s***. They even say to aim for the "bushes" because, like the average American, they assumed there would be something there to break their fall.

How can you not think that there's nothing to interpret in this scene. Everything in this movie is making fun of the situation the country is in right now. That's why the movie is hilarious.

reply

In your opinion what other scenes in the movie are making fun of the situation the country is in??

reply

It would be easier to list the scenes in the movie NOT making fun of the government/economic situation. That's what the movie is about.

reply

Yeah honestly the movie is all about financial scams - like, as a background story but it's definitely there

This scene however was just hysterical comedy. I had to pause to catch my breath, I was seriously bent on the couch laughing

why do so many people like them? I was glad they died. And I predicted it would happen too, as they were falling. I thought "I bet their gonna die.... come on, please die.." and they did! I was so happy. Those guys were jerks. Am I the only one who saw the part where they snapped for no reason at the heroes? *beep* those guys. they were *beep* They got what they deserved. the only thing that would have been better was if they lived to be demoted and see the "Other Guys" become the new super cops. That's what I had been hoping for, but oh well.

reply

I'm pretty sure they had huge egos and thought they could make the jump. I don't get why people are making it out to be something it's not?!
