Watching this movie made me constantly question whether a guy with a beautiful soul like Sandino actually go for this type of woman? She is not even that hot and she smokes/drinks, is having an affair with a married man, doesnt care about anyone else but herself. I didnt find it believable that he would go for that.

What the movie implies is that Sandino saw through April's harden facad to the good person he knew she was inside. April had a reason for being so cruel and mean:
-She had lost her sister to drug addiction.
-She had been estranged from her mother for over a year before she died.
-She had gone through something traumatizing as a child which she expressed during the radio in the bath tub scene saying "Lee told my mama he didn't do nothing either, he said it was all my fault."
So having gone through all that, April was a self destructive person. But despite all her faults she still let Santino rent a room in her house when he had no where to go and was letting the kids stay with her until her mom could be located. So Sandino knew that underneath the harded exterior April had built up after years of hardship, that she was a good person on the inside and that's who he fell in love with.

April was such a goblin, it doesn't matter what all she went through in her childhood, many people go through the same, but she chose to be such a stank. She didn't deserve that beautiful man or those beautiful kids. That's mostly why the movie did not work for me, at the end, I didn't care if April found redemption, I wanted her to end up alone in her pitiful condemned house.

You seem awfully indignant about April ending up with someone as (allegedly) 'beautiful' as sandino, which implies you wouldn't give two drops of pi$$ if he had been someone unattractive.

Compassionate, caring, and above all patient, those are the things that made Sandino beautiful. My problem with the main character was her lack of panic when it was determined her responsible mother was missing 4 days. And then -- I get it - -she didn't want the responsibility of kids and that is her right and is ok. But when it was said the little boy could DIE without insulin -- she went on about her business as usual, then went upstairs later that night and was lying in bed with her boyfriend. WTHeck? What did she think the kids were going to do? She was just going to come downstairs to dead nephew in the morning?

Well the guy was illegal anyway so I'm sure he'll marry anyone to get his papers.
shareSandino only appeared to be attractive once he cut his hair. And April was pretty attractive when she took the time to fix herself up.
Plus, even though he was attractive, his life wasn't carefree, it was rough as he pointed out. Sandino mentioned that at 7 years old he was forced to work long hours and was constantly beaten.
He sees what April and her nieces go through, sympathizes with them, because he's been in the same boat.
