Writing teacher?
It seems like the only adjective in his vocabulary is "amazing" and his literary analysis is about as deep as pond scum.
shareHe figuratively has two windows to the outside world. TV and his students. To him, 'amazing' is his crutch considering he's so out of touch with everything. To him, anything True is amazing as he wallows in self doubt and self destruction. It shows him that his view of everything being said is a lie (the local church) isn't pervasive across the whole world.
Just my thought on the matter.
Or...it's just poorly written.
