Is UFO REALLY That Good?

I'm not talking smack by any means, but i have heard maybe 11 or 12 UFO songs & a good chunk of Strangers In The Night. It is good stuff... but that's it imo. It's not groundbreaking or amazing, and Eddie won't shush about the band.... so are they really that good? what albums should i listen to?

reply

They were a good rock band. Scorpions were better imo. Eddie is just a huge fan boy, that's all. He's like a big geeky kid who never grew up.

If you want to know their best albums. They are: Phenomenon (1974), Force It (1975), No Heavy Petting (1976), Lights Out (1977) and Obsession (1978).

Those 5 are the only one's worth owning. Some really cool songs on them, but Eddie again is making them into the best band that ever existed. Not true. Even Don and Jim are sick of his worshiping of them and Kiss.

Thank's man!

And glad someone else agrees on KISS.. They are criminaly overrated imo. In the rock world

reply

Allow me to disagree!

They were an awesome band, Michael Schenker is one of the most imitated and influential metal/rock guitarrist ever, if not the most. The whole band is great,

Your list of albuns is correct, but you should also give a try to these:

1980 No Place to Run
1981 The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent
1982 Mechanix
1983 Making Contact

Mainly the first two. Please notice, these albuns no longer have Michael Schenker.

He left UFO and created MSG. OP, you should not leave this world without listening to its double live album "One Night at Budokan", which got number 5 at UK charts. Not bad for a metal album, a double one, right? It has Cozy Powell on drums, and the rest of the band is great as well, this formation was considered, along with Rush, to deliver the best live performances ever (from a musician point of view).

I have not seen the show, so if the guy is a fanboy, then he has great musical taste, IMHO.

Last week I got their new album, A Conspiracy of Stars, and it doesn't sound like they've lost a step at all. I'm with Eddie on this - I think they ARE that good. And so many of their earlier albums are classics.

I would tend to agree with Danimal. Especially with what he said about Kiss. It's bubble gum rock in my opinion. Total sellouts as well. What kind of rock band would start playing disco just because it was popular at the time?

reply

NO they're not!

Trunk has too much fat in his head!

I haven't formulated an informed opinon about the band one way or another yet. But I actually find it really refreshing that Eddie is so candid about his obsession with his favorite band. I'm the same exact way with Ronnie James Dio. And everyone around me thinks I'm nuts, because they don't really know who he is. But I think it's a quality that makes Eddie more relatable and down to earth. And I also find it funny how much Jim and Don make fun of him for this! Him getting the guitar from Michael Schenker was the best!

They were excellent, at least their first 4-5 albums.

On the other hand, I don't quite understand Trunk's obsession with them. It doesn't bother me, however, because they all poke fun of him about it, and we all have our faves. To each his own.

But I agree with what some say above. The Scorpions put out far superior material (I mention them because of the obvious relation). In comparison to other bands from the period like Thin Lizzy, again, UFO does not top my list.

Was Schenker influential? I would say that both Schenker's were influential on the NWOBHM movement in the late 70s, but they are certainly not as influential as Hendrix, Blackmore, Page, Iommi or Van Halen overall. I realize some music fans get tired of hearing those same names, but that fatigue doesn't make the point untrue. It's inescapable.

reply

Scorpions peaked with Blackout. UFO are far better imo. After Blackout Scorpions sold out and went the pop metal route.

reply

The Schenker-era UFO albums are up there with the best of Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Deep Purple, etc. from that era. Eddie's just overcompensating for the fact that they barely register with Americans, especially younger fans.

reply

I'm only familiar with the Lights Out album. I'd love to see them on TMS because Eddie is such a huge fan. Maybe they'd give him a guitar like Michael Schenker did.

I have been listening to Eddie Trunk since the '80s. I like the fact that he doesn't play just the obvious bands and/or songs. The only band he played that I really disliked was Marilyn Manson.

reply

Nope. Eddie's just full of crap.
