Brit Marling is
1) the only reason I watched this film.
2) a crusial character. She was the child of Nick and Mimi, and they gave her up so that they could go on doing their sh*t.
Nick "I have a daughter..."
Mimi "I know."
Nick "She is 11, almost 12."
Mimi "Oh, what's her name?"
Mimi never looked back, but Nick did. He gave up his child so that She would have a life. Yes she knew she was adopted, but she didn't care. She loved her parents and didn't ask about her past. Her and Nick was never going to be a family, but her existence is what made Mimi turn herself in, so that Nick could have a life with his child. That life Mimi's actions prevented before.
